  1. The methodology in that listing is a bit odd. For example, Ohtani is on the list, and it shows his annual cost at $70 million, which is not the real AAV, and then there's no actual calculation of surplus value that I can see. It's actually opinion-based-on-some-numbers, I guess.
  2. OPS-wise, yes. But his chase numbers are much worse than anyone could have imagined. I thought he might start taking some walks, but he went in the other direction and decided to take none whatsoever!
  3. Anyone think the Dodgers will go with another bullpen game tonight? I don't see why they wouldn't, frankly.
  4. Per TalkSox contributor Daniel Fox's just-posted article on the Red Sox Stats survey: It is impossible to be a successful big-league hitter with a 46% chase rate. To put things in perspective, that number is worse than Javier Báez in all but his absolute worst season. Towards the end of the season, pitchers realized they didn’t have to throw anything near the strike zone to Rafaela, and his chase rate ballooned to over 56% in September.
  5. I am largely in agreement with all of this. Shocking how many folks would be willing to trade Duran for a pitcher when there are clearly other readily available ways to get one.
  6. Craig is not really in charge and wants us to know that LOL https://www.overthemonster.com/2024/10/10/24266818/craig-breslow-is-not-in-charge-of-the-red-sox
  7. The Os are good now but they're not going to stay that way without spending. Some of that spending will be *involuntary* i.e. arb raises - it's either that or lock 'em up contracts for their young stars.
  8. Ceddanne ended up with 151 Ks and 15 BBs. His last BB was on August 9. If he is to succeed with this approach he would be breaking a paradigm. I don't think it's possible, personally. I don't think he survives as an MLB hitter.
  9. Yeah, good point. The graph I saw was probably a few years old. The Rays have the longest stretch of it going, from 2008 to now.
  10. I actually like Cohen. He's not only willing to spend big,, but he obviously loves the game and has some smarts about it. He did a good job bringing in Stearns and Mendoza.
  11. OK. I was just talking about the general premise of big spending. Big spending comes in different forms. The total contracts for Machado, Tatis and Bogaerts are enormous.
  12. Say what-Gausman doesn't have actual value? He's been one of the best and most durable starters for the last 4 years. And you're getting him on a nice reasonable 2 year deal. And you're free of Yoshida's millstone contract.
  13. Here's a hilarious old cartoon about Drew. That's Ellsbury stealing home right in front of him. This actually happened.
  14. Very fair question. Gausman might be worth 3 wins, losing Yoshida and Abreu might cost 4 wins, so on that basis we lose. Our payroll AAV will go up a few million, our total commitment will go down because Gausman has 2 years while Yoshida has 3. However there are some baseball roster, non-financial advantages, to the deal. Gausman upgrades the rotation pretty significantly, and he's been durable, so he helps the whole staff. Subtracting Yoshida and Abreu takes care of roster clogs and LH hitter clogs. And because the financial hit is small, we'd still have plenty of money to sign more pitching.
  15. A point on which we agree 100%. To me life was pretty good when Ortiz was full-time DH!
  16. But the Padres would not be where they are without their huge financial investments in Machado, Tatis and Bogaerts. And you could also throw in Soto - it was the trade of Soto that resulted in acquiring both King and Cease.
  17. I get that. He could definitely be frustrating at times.
  18. Everybody makes mistakes. It's just that the payroll-tightening trend of the Sox has made the impact of mistakes seem to be magnified.
  19. The only team that has been able to beat the payroll-winning correlation over an extended period is the Rays. Somebody graphed it, and the Rays showed up on the graph like a distant little star LOL
  20. Probably Abreu. I liked moon's idea of trading Yoshida for Gausman and throwing in some money and/or talent to make it happen.
  21. Hitting coach Peter Fatse somehow survived the purge.
  22. I really detest RIP threads, but I'll make an exception here. Tiant was quite possibly the most lovable of all Red Sox heroes. I'll echo notin and hope Luis is enjoying a fine cigar right now.
