  1. By no means the worst pitcher in Red Sox pitcher, but probably the most star-crossed would be our old pal Bob Stanley. Poor Bob factored in two of the most crushing losses in franchise history, the 1978 playoff game and 1986 WS Game 6.
  2. A higher than normal rate of errors can certainly have an impact on defensive WAR.
  3. I agree. And the condescension implied in that sentence is exactly what ticks off a lot of old-schoolers about the 'new metrics'.
  4. Mendoza also has a curious little stat attached to him forever - he was the losing pitcher in Game 3 of the 2004 ALCS - although he was only charged with 1 of the 19 runs. I think that outing was also his last as a Red Sox.
  5. Wow, that is a really damning statement.
  6. Yes and no IMO. I think most people thought of the Price contract as a sort of necessary evil - that we were forced to fork over because our rotation was so weak. But for $31 million a year he was expected to at least perform to his career averages.
  7. LOL you don't give up easy.
  8. Easy solution for announcers - put them on ignore.
  9. I think we're going to have to live with Pablo and Rutledge until Devers is ready. Can't be making panic trades.
  10. The thing is, of course, that if a pitcher puts up truly horrendous numbers he's unlikely to stick around for long.
  11. You two are the board's paragons of patience without a doubt.
  12. Hey, are you a closet Braves fan? I have a ton of respect for Smoltz. He was great as both a starter and a closer. He has a serious golf game too, and he's a pretty good announcer. I was very disappointed with his performance for us, but he was at the end of the line, obviously.
  13. Hanley: Hitting Fair to Good Fielding Poor to Fair (now non-existent) Baserunning Poor Durability Poor to Fair Pablo: Hitting Poor Fielding Poor Baserunning Poor Durability Poor
  14. Good job by Hembree, Kelly & Barnes.
  15. The funny thing is that if you knew Moreland would be OPS'ing 850 at this point you'd think our offense would be in pretty good shape.
  16. The day we signed Hanley and Panda was one very bad day for this team.
  17. I think it's mainly about the LH hitters and the late inning lefty specialists. Managers cringe at the thought that the other team could bring in a LOOGY to face two of his team's good LH batters in a row at crunch time.
  18. From Alex Speier's piece in the Globe today titled "These Red Sox feel like they're one bat short": "Pineda's outing marked the 13th time this season that an opposing starter had thrown at least 5 innings without permitting an earned run against the Sox. No other team in the AL has been shut down in such complete fashion by opposing starters so frequently. (The Angels are the only other AL team against whom opposing starters have at least 10 such games.)"
  19. But what about the Outfield Dance?
  20. This is not about clubhouse discord at all BTW. Price said in fact that the one place he's happy is with his teammates.
  21. Sure we've had injury issues, but most teams do. We have a lot of talent even when we do have some injuries. I don't think injuries have been a major factor.
  22. Frankly Swihart's bat is still in question too. Which is not to say I don't like his potential. But in MLB potential and a quarter will get you a gumball.
  23. Smoltz is a definite contender here. His numbers for us were off-the-charts bad.
