  1. The Castillo situation highlights a big problem with the tax rules. The simple solution would be for contracts like his and Craig's to count as payroll for tax purposes until the player is released.
  2. The whole situation is kind of sick, isn't it? Castillo is being made rich by his contract and at the same time it's actually preventing him from having any chance to play in the big leagues. I'm sure when they were making the rules nobody imagined a situation exactly like this arising.
  3. Barnes being used here should be a sign that Kelly is being promoted to #2 reliever.
  4. That's when you trade Varitek and D-Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb.
  5. I don't believe it's 100% randomness, but there's certainly a lot of it in the game.
  6. Such is baseball. In 2009 I think we beat the Yankees the first 9 times we played them and they beat us the next 9.
  7. Not exactly. I said Kimbrel's contract 'looks like a bargain', and you said we're paying 'near top dollar'. Chapman's contract is a guaranteed 86 million. Our total commitment to Kimbrel was only 24 million, plus a team option for another year at 13 million. There's a huge difference between the two deals. That much at least you have to admit.
  8. But again, Kimbrel's contract looks like a bargain now compared to Chapman's, and that does have to be factored in.
  9. Sure. Kimbrel had a bad season for him last year. This year he's having a crazy good season. KRod and Clippard were both pretty good last year. This year, KRod just got released and Clippard has been struggling. So much of this stuff is almost impossible to predict. As fans and armchair GM's we can sit back and analyze all the different scenarios as time goes on. When you're the actual GM you have to make the decision and live with it.
  10. I don't know if you've ever read Phil Mushnick's stuff in the New York Post, but he uses those exact words when he complains about the way managers do things now.
  11. Once again this is where WAR can provide some interesting data. If Kimbrel maintains his current pace he could end up with a WAR of 4 (which is about as high as a reliever can possibly score). That would make him worth about $30 million this year according to FanGraphs.
  12. On the topic of bullpen management, I watched last night's game on MLB Network with Costas and Jim Kaat. Kimbrel was warming up for the 9th and then Boyer joined him as the Sox were rallying, and then Kimbrel sat down when the Sox made it 9-4. Kaat made an excellent point about why managers will often bring in the closer in those situations even if the team does score some insurance runs. He pointed out that if Boyer gets in trouble, Kimbrel has to get up and warm up all over again, which takes some extra toll on his arm.
  13. Maybe give Dombrowski and the FO some credit for foreseeing where the market was headed. They do consider things like that, or they should.
  14. Signed who and for how much?
  15. The rental price for Moustakas won't be cheap.
  16. I don't disagree on either point. The real question is how badly we needed another starting pitcher in each of those years. Cherington and Dombrowski both thought it was a fairly urgent need at the time. I think they were both right.
  17. And of course there are some who didn't think we needed Peavy in 2013.
  18. Just plain stupid. The classic example for me is the blown save Rivera got tagged with in 2004 Game 5.
  19. And you're probably right. But Pomeranz was the best starter available at the time and they made us overpay. Teams generally do overpay in deadline deals.
  20. I believe that the specific info San Diego withheld was that Pomeranz was taking some sort of anti-inflammatory for his elbow. The Sox obviously decided this wasn't a severe enough issue to rescind the trade.
  21. Yes, I would like to hear Kimmi's comments on this because it's kind of central to this whole issue about whether the manager has any impact or not.
  22. Kelly was gone.
  23. There are times it should be done, but it has to be done judiciously. Obviously the most frequent use of the tactic comes in the postseason because of the importance of the games and the extra rest permitted by the off-days.
  24. It's probably time for Barnes and Kelly to swap places. Kelly has pitched better.
