  1. I don't think it matters much if your rotation is all right handed. The Dodgers just won the title with a postseason pitching staff consisting of 3 right handed starters, and a small army of relievers.
  2. Do you think it's a real possibility that Henry is going to duke it out with the behemoths for Soto?
  3. Soto is a minus defensive player, so you know that in a hypothetical universe where he plays for the Sox, it wouldn't be that long before the suggestions to convert him to a DH start pouring in. 😄
  4. This is the time of year to dream, but any Sox fan who thinks Soto is a real possibility under the ownership of John Henry is so delusional that yes, I have to laugh at it (not in a mean way, though). I'm just surprised that Sox fans can continue to be fooled after what we've seen starting with trading Betts.
  5. Giolito's career has been wildly up and down and in total is mediocrity personified. He has a career ERA of 4.43, FIP of 4.44 and ERA+ of 98.
  6. I love it when the Red Sox have stars, but Soto is not a realistic target for the Red Sox. For one thing, that 12 year/540 million projection is the most "conservative" one I've seen. Most estimates are in the 600 to 700 million range. The 3 financial behemoths of the sport, the Yankees, Mets and Dodgers, are all expected to be bidders. Cohen and Steinbrenner have already lined up their first meetings with Boras. I simply can't see John Henry wanting to get involved in an auction that is certain to end in a historically irrational contractual commitment. Better to dream on Anthony and Duran as stars in the outfield and keep the focus on pitching, IMHO.
  7. Sure it would. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad move. For now I'll assume Breslow has a plan and knows what he's doing. For now.
  8. Yeah, I don't think MIF is an area Craig has to spend much time on this offseason.
  9. I promise to take a look at the payroll tool when I get some time.
  10. I have to question whether we know the exact time his marriage started to fail. We only know the public details.
  11. He also kind of sucked when he pitched in the second half. This guy does seem to have all the makings of a wildly overhyped player.
  12. Could have been the personal issues, could have been the changes in uniform, could have been contract year pressure, could have been pitching hurt, could have been a mechanical issue. Too many possibilities.
  13. I don't want to underplay the significance of a divorce on a player's performance, but Giolito is not exactly the first guy to have personal issues going on during a season, methinks. Now he seems to be the purported poster boy for such issues turning you from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde.
  14. True, but credit the player, he had a superb season and boosted his value.
  15. I'm pretty simple-minded when it comes to this stuff. Sign Fried. Sign Kirby Yates or Tanner Scott. Get another reliever, a short-term catcher like Jansen and a good RH bat by best means possible. Trade Abreu, not Duran.
  16. Of course. But if the Dodgers want him back, the Sox probably don't have much chance. They had a good chance to sign him last year but they passed it up.
  17. Yeah, it does seem like they're making room for him. A 3 way slugfest among the Yanks, Mets and Dodgers would be quite a spectacle. And somehow I don't think Soto would say "OK, that's enough, fellas, bidding's closed" the way Yamamoto did. 😛
  18. $700 million. Hmmm, that's 3.2 times as much as the David Price contract that destroyed John Henry's mind and set us back at least 5 years. 🙃
  19. Here are the top 7 free agent relievers as they are ranked on Keith Law's list of top 50 free agents. This excludes Nick Martinez who was a starter at the end of 2024. With 2024 bWAR/fWAR 1 Jeff Hoffman 2.0/2.0 2 Kirby Yates 3.3/1.9 3 Clay Holmes 0.7/1.2 (no idea why Law ranked him above the ones below) 4 Tanner Scott 4.0/1.6 5 Carlos Estevez 2.1/1.2 6 Blake Treinen 1.4/1.0 7 David Robertson 1.7/1.9 Tanner Scott has been mentioned here frequently as a Red Sox target. I wouldn't mind seeing them sign any of these guys, but I'm really partial to Yates, who had a phenomenal 2024. As with a few other of these guys, he's not a youngster.
  20. If you think the Red Sox are going to seriously pursue Soto, it must really take a lot to knock the Polly out of you.
  21. Yeah, it's gonna be a shame when they fail to line up with anyone again.
  22. 2024 fWAR: Houck 3.9 Pivetta 2.0 Bello 2.0 Crawford 1.9 We really did have a #2 and 3 #3's. As to your question, if you delete Pivetta you certainly could be worse off, if you don't replace with another #3.
