    Porcello will give anyone a twitch this year. It's not really safe to watch.

    So how many innings would you have cut him back to this year if you were manager - 200? 190? 180?

    It's a serious issue, I just don't know if there's any good answer to it. Resting him extensively is kind of hard to do when you're in a battle for the division and you already have Price injured and Porcello sucking.

    Sale's arm seems fine. He's been throwing smoke all season. The other theory, that the more teams see him the more they adapt to him, may be worth considering as an alternative explanation.

    I think historical baseball statistics are excellent. Projections are a whole other story. It's been proven to the nth degree that nobody can predict s***.

    I'll agree that it would have made sense to pull Sale after 6 innings or whatever. But I find it hard to believe a few dozen pitches is going to be the ruination of his season. I think Farrell has tried to manage Sale's workload this year. He's only topped 115 pitches a few times, he's never reached 120 pitches, he's usually been removed at about 110.

    I think there are logical reasons for concern. -4 out of our 5 starters were bad in their latest start. -We're banged up. -We have 4 games with a very good team that may be playing for the best record in the league. -Yankees have been hot. I'm not in a panic, I don't panic about the Sox any more. They've won it all for me 3 times and I've got nothing to complain about. Whatever happens, happens. I just don't think Sox fans should be feeling cozy because a computer program says we're at 95.6%.

    Exactly. His pitch counts have been very strictly managed.

    If Sale is that badly fatigued after he reaches 150 innings or so that's just about an insurmountable problem. He's at 214 innings right now. That's not excessive at all.

    Koufax had 3 seasons where he threw over 300 innings, topping out at an incredible 335! Sale has pitched 214 innings this year. A very reasonable workload for an ace-type pitcher. 111 pitches has never been considered an excessive amount to throw in a game. And he had 5 days off after that.

    Well, if we lose tonight we'd have to take 3 of 4 against Houston to clinch without help. I don't like that prospect too much. It makes tonight's game somewhat important. Farrell may need to be prepared for an early hook with Porcello. And Estrada shut us down last time we faced him. We almost need some reverse lock action tonight.

    In another slightly discouraging piece of news, the last time Porcello faced the Jays at Fenway, a mere 23 days ago, he gave up 7 earned runs and 10 hits in 5.1 IP.

    It does feel like we're suddenly in deep doo-doo...bad performances by key starting pitchers + injuries...ugh.

    Holt was a decent player until this year-a good value for the money, at least, that was how I always looked at him. He hasn't looked very good since coming off the DL, possibly because of lingering effects of the concussion and vertigo issues.

    That's correct. He does get charged with the runs, of course. It's one more reason why ERA isn't totally reliable. Just think if the error that was charged was a bad call by the scorer, that it should have been a hit. That would mean Cashner was let off the hook for what should have been 7 more earned runs.

    Easy. In the 4th inning of the game Cashner gave up the 8 runs. Only 1 was earned because there was an error with 2 outs and 7 of the runs scored after the error. If the error hadn't been made he would only have given up the 1 run. I would almost bet one of the game announcers used the phrase 'opened up the floodgates' LOL
