  1. I think it was 'Buffalo Heads' and I think that was during the Zimmer years. Lee, Carbo and Willoughby were all traded or moved during that time. Lee of course was banished to Zimmer's doghouse in 1978, leading to the infamous Bobby Sprowl game. The trade of Carbo also hurt us in 1978 when we had a terrible bench.
  2. Dombrowski certainly had a wealth of prospects to work with, and he has certainly sawed through them. With regard to the payroll, though, Price has really been the only big-ticket acquisition. Which had a lot to do with being hamstrung by the Hanley-Panda package.
  3. Hmm...another one of those major discrepancies between fWAR and bWAR.
  4. Did you mean Don Zimmer hated Bill Lee? (I don't know, maybe Johnson had problems with him too.)
  5. Might be a good thing for us actually...sort of signals he's just looking for the top dollar and has no preference to return to Arizona.
  6. As far as DD is concerned, his only really large contract so far is Price.
  7. Like it.
  8. This is a perplexing one. Stanton is one of the premier offensive players in the game and not even in prime years yet. You'd think you'd have to give up something of value.
  9. I think Larry was talking about losing scouting types after DD was hired, not losing coaches.
  10. Dave did not have a 'huge budget' to work with. If he did all he had to do for the offense was sign Encarnacion. And you know he would have if Henry authorized it. Of course you're not into reasonable debate, just hyperbole with a lot of exclamation marks.
  11. Let's be reasonable. There's no way in hell we're getting Bryant for Benintendi. Whatever Theo was thinking, I know it wasn't that. There's also no way in hell we're trading Benintendi for Schwarber.
  12. I don't disagree that Kimbrel was an overpay. If he was as good in all 3 years of the contract as he was this year, though, 3.5 WAR good, he'd be worth a lot more than 12 million a year, if those FanGraphs dollar values mean anything.
  13. I guess you don't subscribe to the view that you can't have enough pitching.
  14. It was Rafael Soriano's signing that Cashman publicly opposed.
  15. It's certainly all about what he wants to do himself. Some ex-players really enjoy managing or coaching, but it sure isn't for everyone.
  16. Sale and Kimbrel had a combined fWAR of 11.0 this year (combined bWAR of 9.7) on a team that won 93 games and won the division by 2 games. They were 2 of our top 4 players. I don't get how you can criticize them as unnecessary moves.
  17. Keuchel, Giles, Darvish and Jansen are also chockers based on this series.
  18. Baseball is a very difficult sport in which to evaluate clutch or choke. For starters, the game revolves around a contest between hitter and pitcher in which the hitter is always at a sizable disadvantage. So even if you're David Ortiz, you're still going to make an out more often than not in a big situation.
  19. An ever-popular topic! http://www.talksox.com/forum/threads/18067-Clutch-vs-non-clutch
  20. That game was beyond crazy. A thriller but also kind of ugly. Like a sandlot game. Home run records being shattered all over the place. I can't help thinking the ball is juiced and that is kind of tainting the whole thing.
  21. I'll ask you the same question I've asked elsewhere: How was Dombrowski supposed to rebuild our pitching staff from virtually nothing without depleting the farm?
  22. Keith Foulke is another. Especially since Tito pretty much ruined his arm in the 2004 postseason. It was worth it.
  23. Whether or not Ben blew up the rotation, the fact is that Dombrowski inherited a very bad pitching staff and no pitching prospects that were anywhere near ready to help. He certainly may have overpaid on the Kimbrel trade. But the point is, there was no way to fix the pitching except by depleting the farm.
  24. It's true. Wouldn't that be something now?
  25. He still goes down as a big time postseason performer in my books. You can't take away what he did in 2003 and 2007 because of what happened after that. As sk7326 says, flags fly forever.
