    OK, you finally made me look up Ontiveros's game log for 2000. He had one horrific start, then 2 good relief appearances. Fister, it must be pointed out, was pretty awful himself at times. Overall he was mediocre at best.

    145 in the two years before he got there, to be exact. But your point stands that they were horrible in his first two years. OTOH Theo's Cubs were pretty horrible in his first two years too, winning 127 games compared to 146 the previous two years. Doesn't really mean much, does it? The Tigers hadn't made the playoffs since 1987 when Dombrowski took over, I think that's a little more to the point.

    Playing for the Twins today: Zack Granite He came into today hitting .150 this spring. So yes, he's off to a rocky start.

    Yeah, I was going to mention that. That's where Swihart got injured. With Hanley, I'm not sure if it was the Monster or the side wall.

    If you have the highest payroll now, you're not bad for the game, you're good for the game.

    It could be that DD thinks Johnson and Velazquez both deserve a legitimate shot as starters. And I suspect he's also keeping a sharp eye on what's left in the dumpster.

    Forget Lynn, man, the dude turned down 2 years and $20 mill. We just don't have enough left in the cookie jar. We need to do a dumpster dive. R. A. Dickey is not that bad in that category. He's durable and can probably keep the ERA under 5.

    Seriously, if JD has a case of being wall-shy, left field in Fenway might be an issue. Especially if he knows that Hanley and Swihart both got hurt out there only recently.

    All the more reason they might look to trade JBJ, and/or Bogaerts at some point. Although I don't know how they would replace Bogaerts.

Jason Mastrodonato ‏Verified account @JMastrodonato 2m2 minutes ago Looks like every player who had a flexor strain last year missed at least six weeks except Pomeranz, who got a late start after a stem cell injection in his elbow and then missed the minimum 10 days on the DL to start the year. Diagnosis then was a left forearm flexor strain.

    Boston’s analytics department is now up to 10 full-time employees (plus interns) Holy crap, that really is an amazing number of people analyzing baseball data, especially when you consider how much work is being done by the computer programs themselves.
