I would have to think that holding out until June looks like a horrible option to most players. You're looking at missing about half the season. That's a sizable chunk of your career. And falling behind that far in live action time could screw up your whole season.

I guess it's safe to say not even Theo saw this bargain basement situation developing. Otherwise he probably wouldn't have signed Chatwood for 3 years/38 million. He might have been able to re-sign Arrieta for that kind of money now.

It is a crazy situation. I was just reading Peter Abraham's piece about Castillo in the Globe. Castillo's only hope of getting to the big leagues is to absolutely light it up in AAA to the point that other teams are convinced he's a real MLB player, maybe even a potential star. But even then his price tag (3 years, 35.5 million remaining) is a little hefty by this offseason's standards. For a trade partner you would probably need a team in contention with a desperate need for an outfielder.

It was Wayne Huizenga who dismantled the 1997 team, and then sold it to John Henry after the 1998 season.

Dombrowski left the Marlins in decent shape, considering that they won the World Series the year after he left. As for Detroit, they nearly made the playoffs in 2016, and they might have done so if the new GM had made a better signing than Jordan Zimmerman.

I thought it was one-1997 with Florida. He went to Detroit in 2002. Or do you have me on a technicality somewhere?

A GM should be judged on the totality of their moves. Ben gets reamed, unfairly or not, mainly because the team finished last 3 times in his 4 seasons, plus he is held accountable for arguably dismantling a good pitching staff, plus Pablo and Hanley. Theo generally gets a pass for Crawford because of his overall record. DD is still in favor with most fans because he has back to back division wins and a pretty good looking 2018 team. But DD takes his lumps from a few posters here, too.

Stunning. The guy was projected to get 5/85. And of course he turned down a 17.4 QO. Just be thankful the Yanks didn't swoop in on this, I guess.

What I'm reading is that it's possible he'll be ready for the start but they don't really know yet, there's no timetable etc. He hasn't started throwing again yet. I'm sure they'll take it slow and careful.

I don't think Lackey is coming here. Buchholz or Dickey would be my guess if DD signs any of them.

a) I don't think it's a case of freaking out...just typical pre-season chatter. I think it might be a tad optimistic to say there's a strong likelihood Pomeranz starts the season, which is only 3 weeks away. But we'll see. c) What's the harm in signing a guy to a minor league deal for further insurance? A lot of teams have signed pitchers to minor league deals already.
