He just had the best season of his career. He had 29 homers in 62 games with Arizona. How are we supposed to even take you seriously with statements like this?
Honestly I think they are totally locked in on JDM and that's about it other than minor stuff. I think if they didn't feel totally confident in eventually signing him, they would have moved on to something else by now.
Boras annoys me, but he's not the one who is responsible for the wacky economic system of baseball.
I think Martinez probably merits a 5 year/$125 million deal off his last 4 years of production in which he has averaged about 4 WAR.
Time is actually getting short. We are now at about the midpoint between Christmas Day and the start of spring training. And Christmas Day doesn't feel very long ago.
Good point about DD contradicting himself by now expressing comfort with the 2018 Red Sox offense after saying "I didn't supply the players that would give us enough runs" following last season.
It's possible that Boras misread the market this time. MLBTR predicted a contract of 6/$150 for JDM and that seems quite fair.
Boras came out and publicly declared he was looking for 7/$210. That is a huge gap and I think we're seeing that his number was completely unrealistic.
Has he created a situation where his client feels embarrassed by how low the actual offers are? I don't know but I think it's possible.
J.D. Martinez wants more than $125 million, that's what he wants. If the Red Sox outbid themselves and jumped their offer I'm sure his feelings toward them would get warmer and fuzzier.
I will be bold enough to predict that Martinez is not getting any $180 million.
As you have said, MLBTR is pretty good with their predictions, and I think their prediction of 6/$150 is as high as anyone is going to go.
There has to be something a little devious going on. Not even Boras himself expected to have Martinez, Hosmer, Moustakas and Arrieta still unsigned on January 19. He'll have something to say about it all at some point, I expect.
