  1. And of course, sometimes it's being stupid.
  2. I've been reading some stuff about Sale that make him seem like a great teammate and citizen. He made the trip to Puerto Rico with Cora and a few others to deliver supplies to hurricane victims. He was doing some work with Jason Groome in the offseason.
  3. I think the highest comp picks you can get for losing a free agent under the new system are sandwich picks.
  4. Would you rather have prospects or Porcello?
  5. I read Joe Torre's book, God help me, and there was some semi-interesting stuff about the Yankees clubhouse. Torre basically said it's a big load off the manager's back if you have guys in the clubhouse who will sort of keep everyone in line, who will call somebody out for not hustling etc. I think the guys he mentioned as playing that role were Paul O'Neill and David Cone.
  6. Well, they did flip Cespedes for Porcello.
  7. I certainly wouldn't argue with this. But let's not get things confused here. Management and leadership can be 2 completely different things. Good managers can be completely behind the scenes, practically invisible. I've been taking some issue with another poster's contention that the 2017 Red Sox, especially the hitters, suffered from a lack of leadership. When you start saying things like that, that's when you're really taking the next step with intangibles and just basically making stuff up that may not be true at all.
  8. I think the impact of these qualities in baseball is especially hard to prove because of the quirky nature of the game. Now if it was football, would anyone really try to deny that Tom Brady has them?
  9. As far as being able to actually see signs that the team lacks leadership, the only one I would subscribe to is if the team looks like they're not hustling.
  10. You got it. He surrendered that blooper to centre by Papi. He actually pitched pretty well in that game.
  11. What I've been reading is that Hosmer & Boras are looking for 9 years. Absolutely nuts.
  12. Sure, if you want to count snow.
  13. No, he really was involved in a big moment in Red Sox history.
  14. Former Yankee pitcher Esteban Loaiza has been arrested on felony drug charges. Can anybody tell me Loaiza's big moment in Red Sox history, without looking it up?
  15. Interestingly, last night I saw that MLB Network has a show about the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates. On September 1, 1971 the Pirates became the first team in MLB history to field a starting nine consisting entirely of minority players. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PIT/PIT197109010.shtml
  16. An interesting take on Boras's role in this stagnant offseason: https://www.athleticsnation.com/2018/2/9/16997594/mlb-offseason-free-agency-scott-boras-tony-clark-mlbpa
  17. I can't really buy into this. For one thing, the 2017 team had an incredible 15-3 record in extra inning games. Some of that is luck and some is just good bullpen pitching. But still, you have to have some mental toughness to put up a record like that.
  18. What would Theo do in this situation? If you look at the Darvish deal, Theo really put in a lot of bells and whistles - incentive clauses, a 2 year opt-out etc. Maybe Dave needs to do something a little creative, if they really want to sign Martinez. If they can sign him without adding too much more in actual cash it might be worth it just so they know what the 2018 team is.
  19. So if we had a leader we 'can win 95 games'. Funny thing is, we won 93 games last year without a leader. So you think this great leader might make a difference of 2 whole games. Wow, that's really exciting.
  20. Cheer up, man. Until 2001 the Patriots had never won it all and the Red Sox hadn't won since 1918. Now they have a combined 8 championships since 2001. The Celtics and the Bruins have each won championships since then as well.
  21. Let's try this again. You said: "No GM goes 7-8 years straight drafting 20 or lower." I questioned the validity of this statement and that's why I pointed out the Yankees record for 1995-2012.
  22. Yes, we finished last 3 out of 4 but we won it all the other year. Then we won the division in 2016 and 2017. Since 2003 this team has been more or less continuously successful. When you get knocked out in the first round it's easy to say we 'didn't look like a contender'. I tend to subscribe to the 'playoffs are a crapshoot' theory myself.
  23. And this is why I tend to stay away from all the detailed stuff about farm rankings and prospects. All that really matters to me is that Dombrowski and company make an intelligent effort to re-stock our depleted farm.
  24. I think Red Sox fans really have gotten jaded by success. The team wins 93 games and the division and people talk about them like they were a disgrace. It's kind of f***ed-up.
