  1. Right, but when we're #2 it's a bit more stimulating and there's hope of adding another silver medal to the Interest Kings hardware.
  2. Cohen didn't have to spend $250M than he did for Soto, so that's all in Hypothetical Never-Never Land. All he had to do was beat the Yanks, and he knew the Yanks would be just a bit more rational than him. As for Burnes, I can deal with this hypothetical. It's quite possible that while Cohen thinks Soto is worth every penny, he's not nearly as big on Burnes.
  3. The only surprising thing about this proposal from moon was that he left out Wink. Usually he bundles Abreu, DHam and Wink.
  4. I think drewski posted that BTV showed a fair swap would be Jones for Abreu plus another player with a +10 surplus. It seemed a bit light in the real world.
  5. Can't even get interested, because I suspect the Sox are probably about 25th on the list of teams he's looking at.
  6. He's just trying to keep things fair for the rest of us, moon. (Seems like you and me have potential for a long running debate/joke about moneybags Cohen. 🙂)
  7. Right. And Cohen's Mets are not cost-effective. They've incurred some heavy bottom line losses. The Mets are a vanity asset and labor of love for Cohen, obviously. He's living out a fantasy of owning his favorite sports team. And he wants to deliver rings to that team, badly.
  8. "We three Kings* of Interest are Bearing unserious offers we traverse afar" * Henry, Werner, Kennedy (Just wanted to throw in something in the holiday spirit.)
  9. Of course money isn't nothing to him. That's a straw man. You don't get that rich without having a lot of love for money. Cohen is crazy but he's not a fool, you might say. He's the guy who wants it all. He wants to outspend everyone else when necessary, but he also wants to be the smartest guy when necessary. And he's got a pretty smart CBO now in Stearns. And the new manager seemed to do a good job in 2024.
  10. Of course he wouldn't go to 1.6 billion, that was just moon playing in his hypotheticals room. The fact is he didn't have to! I think Steve Cohen is very familiar with the joke about the two guys running away from a bear: You don't have to outrace the bear. You just have to outrace your buddy. In this case the buddy was Hal Steinbrenner. And Hal did reportedly have a chance to equal or beat Cohen's winning offer, but he decided he'd had enough and it was time to lay down.
  11. "Projected as front runners" LOL. There are so many ways to say We're Really Really Interested! I don't think people can even fully appreciate just how Interested we are!
  12. Yeah, but that resulted in a 375 million payroll and a 100 million tax bill for 2023, a total of 475 million. I'm gonna have to say that's insane money however you look at it.
  13. No, that level of irrationality would not happen. It never does. But Cohen probably went into this knowing it might get to $750-800 million-which you could argue is plenty irrational-and he was perfectly comfortable with it. He also showed his smarts by bending over backward to show Soto just about anything would be done to get him to sign and Soto would be treated better than a family member LOL
  14. Maybe the spreadsheet guys had some projections that a $700 million investment in a 26 year old superstar had an excellent chance of being recoverable.
  15. Sadly, we have seen the unconscionable for 3 straight seasons, and I'm not comfortable it won't be 4.
  16. It's very, very hard to say with this ownership now. Even though they appeared to be serious about Soto, it's no guarantee at all that they're boosting the payroll. Maybe they were thinking Soto or nothing. They have become enigmatic.
  17. It's very possible if not probable that they're done with the rotation. I kind of keep forgetting about Giolito. Crochet Houck Bello Crawford Giolito Depth: Criswell/Fitts/Priester/Whitlock/whoever If that's the case, they really ought to sign a good reliever or two.
  18. Yeah, if he proves he's healthy we might only have to eat 90% of his salary. Sorry man, I'm in my morning rant mode here.
  19. This is kind of what we've been reduced to. The Yanks made it to the World Series but hey, we can gloat a little about Verdugo. He's out of their hair now.
  20. Not exactly, but he was certainly one of the best moves of the last 5 years.
  21. I wonder if their offer to Burnes is fully prepared yet? 😛
  22. Problem is we were saying stuff just like this the last few years around this time, and not much materialized.
