  1. Players often rent apartments during the season. Of course with a big star on a long term deal it might just be a temporary arrangement prior to buying a house.
  2. Well, the Dodgers did guarantee him 102 million in his last deal, with 2 opt-outs... Just gonna have to agree to disagree. I think it's pretty damn odd that not one team has given him a shot under the low-commitment terms he's proposed...
  3. I would do it, I just don't think the Red Sox would. Truth be told, I suspect that the teams have a covert agreement in place that no one will touch him. Because in baseball terms it makes no sense that no one would give him a shot last year.
  4. OK, well you really believe in the long layoff factor, as you're entitled to. Personally I think in one of one moon's alternate universes where Bauer has a clean slate, teams would absolutely be giving him a shot. He pitched extremely well in both 2020 and 2021. He'll be 34 at the start of the 2025 season.
  5. At the moment it's this or debating the merits of signing Trevor Bauer. The guys who say the MLB free agent season is an absurdly dragged out and excruciatingly frustrating process to follow have it right, I'd say.
  6. I thought it was a pretty simple question. And if I haven't made myself clear enough about the baggage by now, I don't see much point spending any more time on it...
  7. Gun to my head, I actually think I'd answer yes to whether Soto is coming to Boston or not. I just have a feeling about it now, and the Dominican fraternity is part of that feeling. But I'm absolutely prepared for it to go the other way too.
  8. Are you saying that, setting the baggage aside, you wouldn't even bother giving him a shot no matter how low the cost?
  9. Certainly there's a substantial risk he has nothing left. But given his pedigree, if he didn't have the baggage he would be a low-cost flier. It's pretty obvious that's not the reason no MLB teams are interested, regardless how minimal the cost.
  10. Keep in mind that the Dodgers released Bauer just weeks after he was reinstated by MLB and was free and clear to rejoin the team. According to what they said publicly, the process they went through before making that decision included polling the players. They described it as a unanimous decision.
  11. Valdez seems thoroughly incapable of hitting lefties.
  12. And if Hader was playing for Boston it might have been a different story. Duran's incident might be a relevant comp. He seems to have survived it, but I would submit that if there's a repeat occurrence it could result in them having to move him.
  13. With Bauer, the risk of unwanted distractions hanging over the team can't even be computed.
  14. No. As I keep pointing out, the Sox had a PR disaster from using Matt Dermody for 1 game in 2023. I think Chaim Bloom was thoroughly shocked, flustered and embarrassed by the firestorm Dermody created. Bauer's only shot is with a low-profile team that's not under the media microscope like Boston, where if he pitched well and behaved he might refurbish his image. But it looks like not even those teams are interested.
  15. Well, in general terms you may have a point. I guess I'm looking at it specifically from the point of view of the Red Sox having Yoshida. The only way this guy can have any possible value is as a full time DH. If he can't hit lefties and has to be platooned, he's a severe impediment to in-game roster flexibility. He could theoretically grab a glove and play OF, but it seems like the team wants no part of that. So if he can't hit lefties, he's simply a liability.
  16. Steve Cohen would have a good laugh at the idea that would be enough difference to knock him out of the bidding.
  17. If it just comes down to an EBay auction, I think the Sox drop out, and probably with good reason. I think they're hoping the Dominican Connection and the other place of play factors give them an edge.
  18. I don't think a full-time platoon DH is feasible. Especially with starting pitchers going so much shorter in games and openers and bullpen games. Out of 4-5 ABs you'll often be facing 3-4 different pitchers. More than ever you need a DH that can hit both lefties and righties.
  19. A classic Catch-22! Maybe Andrew Bailey knows Walker and invites him for a private session because he wants to help...
  20. Well, there's plenty of buzz out there that the Sox are very serious here, and the "Dominican Connection" thing is real, so there's reason to get hopes up. But nobody ever said beating the 2 NY teams in a financial cage match was going to be easy...
  21. Slaten perhaps. The other 3 can only reasonably be projected as average MLB pitchers, and that might even be a best case scenario. We can't just go on their good stretches.
  22. Yoshida and Walker contracts are both deep underwater. You're basically exchanging trash and hoping the new trash yields a bit more than the former trash. The thing about Yoshida is he seems to be a roster clog. Can't keep him, move Devers to first and Casas to DH while he's here. Breslow says he's not looking to trade Casas. Something has to give.
