  1. And only 0.8 bWAR. So it was a "system-dependent" year, crappy by one system, decent by another. Pointing out a 6+ year age difference is lazy and unjustified? That's one of the nuttiest statements I've read here this year.
  2. Buehler is a lot younger than Kluber was. Honestly, I think one of the biggest reason Buehler is being advocated by a few of us is that we're so conditioned to this team not wanting to spend much money on starting pitching. Taking a shot at Buehler for $15 mill or whatever seems better than nothing. We can be pretty sure Burnes is not a realistic target.
  3. "Left him to rot" - the tax loophole thing wasn't really DD's fault...
  4. I'm with you on the Buehler train, man.
  5. Look folks, they tried for Soto and they tried for Fried. That's some really big trying for this year. They're kind of worn out now. But they'll try again next year.
  6. The Yanks actually balked at giving him a suite because Judge and other stars have always paid for theirs. Obviously the money is the biggest decider but it seems like Cohen also made a strong impression by treating Soto like royalty in every way.
  7. Cohen not only went to $765 million, he: -gave an opt out after 5 years that the Mets can void by adding $40 million to the remaining deal and making it $805 million. -gave Soto and his family the use of a luxury suite at the park plus God knows what other perks. Even the Yanks had to give up at that point.
  8. Well, it was my theory that our only shot was if he really bought into the Dominican Connection stuff. Obviously that was not the case.
  9. Yes, they get ballsy on the silent auctions for some reason. We need more of them LOL
  10. FWIW the speculation is that Cora and Kennedy are high on signing Bregman but Breslow is not.
  11. Whatever you want to think. They just tossed in the towel twice to NY on Soto and Fried, and as much as I don't really want to quote STORK, the facts are not in dispute.
  12. Well, it's a misunderstanding then. All I really meant was that if Cohen decided he was prepared to get really stupid - which he obviously was - Henry would simply toss in the towel. But it's also true that Cohen has more money than Henry, so it's true that he could always be the high bidder.
  13. When I said we couldn't outbid Cohen, I meant we couldn't outbid him without reaching an amount that was much crazier/stupider than John Henry would be willing to reach. And that's exactly what happened. But Steve Cohen didn't stop John Henry. John Henry stopped John Henry. I said the Red Sox only shot was if Soto really wanted to play for the Sox. He was all about the money so we had no shot.
  14. Cohen didn't force us to stop bidding. Henry had just seen enough. Same thing with Fried, they fell way short on that too. I'm not saying they did the wrong thing, I'm just saying they have never outbid the Yanks in any significant reported competition for a player.
  15. Pure unfounded speculation on those names, there was no reportage. I suppose you can guess that everyone was in on everyone. Pretty sure we didn't outbid the Yanks on Soto. Their final offer was reported as $760 million. I believe the Sox dropped out at around $700 million.
  16. As my post clearly stated, I'm talking about outbidding the Yanks. He has never done so. Soto and Fried are merely the latest examples of tossing in the towel LOL
  17. Last year, at the start of the offseason, Montgomery was one of the guys we thought was a potential target. But he wasn't the only one. I wanted Gray, and then Imanaga. I think you also wanted Gray. It wasn't until Snell and Montgomery were the only two guys of any consequence left, and in the context of our only signing being Giolito, we all started to howl for Montgomery as the last realistic option. That's how I remember it, anyway.
  18. Never has been, never will be. I believe JH decided a long time ago that trying to outbid the Yanks is just a bad idea. And now the Mets would be added to that and possibly the Dodgers as well.
  19. I don't think it's a myth. It might be overhyped a bit, that's all. You don't see many impactful trades between the Red Sox and other AL East teams. Minor ones, sure. Unless we count the Beeks for Eovaldi trade or the Springs trade.
  20. The market has become incredibly hard to predict. Last year what happened with the Boras Four was totally bizarre. This year the money has been flowing so far, but you never know when it will dry up. Because we really have no clue what each team's budget is. And most of the big spenders have luxury tax issues to consider.
  21. Not really. He had 4 Game Scores of 50 or better in September. Looks more to me like a guy who was gradually finding his stuff again.
  22. I understand what you're saying, but "worth" is a very, very fuzzy word here. Sometimes people overpay for things simply because they're uninformed, stupid or whatever. Yoshida wasn't worth his contract for example, and reportedly a lot of people in baseball said so at the time.
  23. And if it's a podcast for frat boy types, his nickname is Crotch Rocket...
  24. They did win the World Series that year and Vaz did his job. But that's beside the point of whether any of these trade proposals make any actual sense for them...
  25. Yeah, this is a much fairer system. They can actually do some things right.
