  1. This is just it, the rules that determine who gets the win or loss are pretty wacky. This year Bello was 14-8 with a 4.49 ERA, and Houck was 9-10 with a 3.12 ERA. Crawford was 9-16 with a 4.36 ERA. Obviously mostly luck.
  2. I lived and died with the 1975-1978 teams. I died on October 2, 1978, and it took a few years to resurrect me.
  3. What about Kirby Yates? I'm surprised he hasn't signed yet.
  4. Team wins and losses - very important Pitcher wins and losses - not very important Why should a relief pitcher who pitched 1 inning be designated as the game winner? Why should a starter who pitched 5 innings be the winner? It's a team game, that's the bottom line. Once upon a time pitching wins and losses did mean more, when starters were routinely throwing complete games. But even back in 1968, you can see with Gibson and McLain that the W-L records didn't match up with the ERAs. Gibson's record should have been much better than McLain's and instead it was much worse.
  5. Frankly until this thread I'd never heard of anything that was the best for a particular century called a "record".
  6. And it'll be the 50th anniversary of that season, so we got that going for us.
  7. The next few months will say a lot. But we still can't see any tangible signs that they're back spending like a big market team again.
  8. Where are you getting the info that they were working on the Castillo trade and the Crochet trade at the same time? Here's what was reported by Boston Strong Dec 26: The Red Sox couldn’t get a deal done with the Mariners for Luis Castillo because they wanted Triston Casas and the Red Sox were only open to trade Casas if they took Yoshida too. That’s why they went with Walker Buehler instead. - @Feinsand
  9. I think that rumored scenario preceded the Buehler signing, not the Crochet trade.
  10. Well, if you believe they're on the level about spending and competing, their #1 target was Fried, and when they lost out there they pivoted to Crochet. I don't think they were ever really big on Burnes. He does have some concerning trends going on. Burnes's deal has an opt-out after 2 years, so that adds a bunch of risk for Arizona.
  11. Arenado is almost 34, his bat is declining rapidly and he has an AAV of 30.56 million for another 3 years. His defense is still very good. We'd dump Yoshida but our payroll would go up by an AAV of 12.56 million. Giving up Mayer to make this happen is just way too much. Unless that's a great young catcher you have in mind.
  12. 2023 splits: Bases empty .874 Men on .676 2024 splits: Bases empty .640 Men on .940 Looks like one of those regression/correction things we all love so much.
  13. True, Arroyo was not an elite talent. He was mainly a good innings-chomper.
  14. The 6 man rotation idea gets floated a lot, but no MLB teams seem to actually want to try it. Mainly I assume because every 5th day is generally considered optimal for a starter's performance. And the piggyback idea for 2 starters has been proven to not work, I'd say.
  15. Oh yeah. We're done with adding starters.
  16. Just for the sake of having a stance, I'm going to say they commit to him staying in the bullpen.
  17. Here's a 2003 "closer by committee" article by McAdam. Pretty hilarious reading now. https://www.espn.com/mlb/columns/mcadam_sean/1489225.html
  18. Why do you refuse to acknowledge the existence of Brandon Lyon?
  19. Not sure babied is the right term. He threw 73.1 IP which I expect is above average for a reliever these days. His usage was different because he had so many multi-inning appearances, and a lot of them were high-leverage as he evolved into the "relief ace". It worked beautifully that year. It's been a mess ever since. Hopefully they do keep him in the pen and he stays healthy.
  20. I thought they adjusted it every year but I'm not sure about that. It does seem to have been at about $8 million a while.
  21. Examples needed. We were talking about John Lackey yesterday. He threw about 215 innings in 2013 including the postseason.
