  1. C'mon man, we're in a hypothetical wonderland here, you can't get stuck on what actually happened.
  2. Here's what I say: if a Red Sox fan can HONESTLY say that if the Sox won it in 2020, they would not count it or would devalue it on some sort of scale like you, then sure, the same would apply to the Dodgers. But I'm highly skeptical any Sox fan wouldn't be fighting tooth and nail for that being a totally legit ring.
  3. I'm certainly not arguing the Astros haven't also been successful. But the Dodgers have been roughly just as successful, and they seem well set up to keep it going a while.
  4. Ego is definitely a big factor. Another may be that players have other people telling them to go for the max-their agents, the players' union, family and friends.
  5. And moon, if you're going to play the 'tainted' card, what about 2017?
  6. Not counting 2020 is BS, IMHO. The Dodgers beat the best in the playoffs that year. Everyone knew what the deal was and agreed to it. MLB made the best of it in a pandemic. If anyone thinks it would have been better to cancel the year completely, they're entitled to that opinion, of course. And the Dodgers have been killing it in the regular season - 12 straight years in the playoffs. 4 pennants in the last 8 years. How much success do you want?
  7. I believe Andrew Friedman is on record that when they traded for Betts they fully intended to make a big effort to extend him. If COVID didn't enter the picture maybe they just would have had to pay 10% more or something. There are a lot of possibilities. But it seems clear now the Red Sox had made their best offer at $290 or whatever, and they were out of the Mookie Betts business after that.
  8. Hard to say. It seems odd that Betts's agent would counter $290 mill with $400 mill to begin with. But if he did it may just have been a message that $290 was simply not getting it done and they had to move the line.
  9. Maybe Merloni can ask Scott about that rumored counter.
  10. Based on what Scott is saying, if the Sox had offered something like 11 and 330 mill, I think Mookie is still patrolling RF for us.
  11. I understand the Sox reasoning totally. It's absurd to just keep increasing your offer if Cohen has promised to beat them all by $50 mill. Unless you think it would be fun to make Cohen pay $800 million, I guess... At some point someone has to force the issue like this.
  12. We'll never know about the COVID impact. I tend to think the fact that the Dodgers were a very attractive destination had something to do with it too.
  13. Right. This is why I'm saying the details all make sense and seem totally credible. As Dan Secatore puts it, Mookie was not adamant about testing free agency, but he was adamant about not giving a discount. He wanted market value.
  14. Another interesting item is about Devers. Many in the org wanted to extend him early but it was nixed because of lux tax concerns at the time. As Scott says, an example of a short term decision having adverse long term effects.
  15. Yeah, Secatore says he figures Scott is piping up now because he knows that.
  16. Also, Scott is not really ripping Henry for anything. He's saying it was an organizational decision that the Red Sox were not in the business of giving out mega-contracts. He's also pushing back against the idea the Sox didn't care that much about competing the last few years.
  17. Agreed. I do note that one of the guys going back and forth with Scott was Lou Merloni, who I believe was the source of the report that the Sox offered $300 million. And he didn't question Scott on any of the facts/comments about the Sox offers. If anyone in the present front office thinks Scott isn't right, I would assume we'll hear something about it.
  18. Supposedly Cohen has said he'll beat any other offer by $50 million. Kind of makes it an exercise in futility if you think it's just top dollar wins. I think that's why they're asking for the meeting. And it sounds like they're ready to walk away and move onto other things.
  19. The money quote: Mookie would have signed with us for maybe even a little less. We didn't get there.
  20. What he's saying all makes perfect sense though, and it doesn't sound like he's trying to sensationalize anything.
  21. SENSATIONAL piece here from Dan Secatore recapping the recent revelations coming from one-time Sox executive Zack Scott. It all sounds credible and logical. This is a must-read. https://www.overthemonster.com/2024/12/5/24314082/red-sox-juan-soto-free-agent-rumors-mookie-betts-dodgers-trade
  22. Per Red Sox Stats: hot off the presses The Red Sox have requested a meeting with Boras and Soto where they will be given price that would get a deal finalized.
  23. Seems like this is just one guy's prediction.
