    Pythagorean records are interesting but ultimately meaningless. We have seen teams with massive discrepancies over entire seasons.

    The rumblings and grumblings from places like Sons of Sam Horn are that Breslow's organizational approach to hitting is extremely analytics-driven and "one-size-fits-all" and that this is adversely affecting the younger guys especially. No idea if this is correct, but something sure seems wrong with the approach.

    I find it hard to be hyper critical when someone seems to have done better than what most of us wanted him to do. Personally I don't measure the performance of the CBO against what any of us said they should have done. I find that pretty silly, actually. They are the ones who are paid to do that job, they are the ones with all the supposed expertise and inside info, they are the ones with the power to make the moves. (Note: I don't mean to come off as sounding harshly critical of you personally. I guess I'm looking for reactions more than anything. I respect your takes, you're very consistent with them.)

    As I said, if they kept Betts and didn't keep Sale and Bogaerts. That would have reduced the payroll AAV. Here is what you said that sounded to me like being an apologist: It's hard for any GM to make up for all the players lost and aging stars with big contracts to rebuild when spending less and less each winter. Maybe deadline moves could have swung some seasons, but the "new GM" would have had to have great winters, year after year. Hard to do on peanuts. It sounds like Bloom and Breslow couldn't have been expected to do much better than they did.

    Durbin is 0 for 14 in the last 4 games. OPS at .557.

    To me it feels like you're being an apologist. Which is fine, I've been an apologist at times too. I place zero blame on Bloom for 2020 and obviously he did pretty well in 2021. Starting with 2022 things have been pretty crappy.

    Our payrolls weren't really peanuts. They were disappointing to us as demanding Sox fans, but they weren't peanuts. Story and Yoshida are obvious examples of spending badly.

    I'm a bottom line guy. There are always going to be some moves that work out and some that don't. But when you look at our W-L records and our payrolls in the Bloom-Breslow years, there's just no way to call them successful CBO's. And what are the Boston Red Sox doing hiring back-to-back heads of baseball operations with zero experience at the job?

    And this is where blame has to fall on Henry. He has made the Red Sox CBO an unattractive job. You can win 3 division titles and a championship in 4 years and still get unceremoniously booted.

    True. What we do know is that the years 2020-2026 have been bad to mediocre, with the one brief bright spot of the 2021 postseason run.

    They would have been better off with the same budgets if they: a) Kept Betts b) Let Sale and Bogaerts walk c) Hired a CBO who made better moves

    You're not going to get vintage every year. Betts's lowest bWAR in full seasons since 2015 has been 4.1 in 2021.

    Disagree about 2025. He had a 4.9 bWAR and a 3.4 fWAR. His SS defense has turned out to be much better than average. As for this season, we would need prime Ortiz and prime Manny to save us.

    The 2026 team is making Breslow's architectural skills look like crap.

    I would disagree on Betts, because he has earned his contract in previous years and it's too early to write him off this year. The Bogaerts and Devers contracts look pretty bad.

    Chapman's option for 2027 is also a vesting option, if he pitches 40 innings and passes a year end physical he is retained for 2027 at $13 million.

    OK, but you're also saying that you think Devers would be putting up better stats with the Red Sox, right? So in this case you're kind of arguing against his actual numbers.

    Data is very important in baseball. But it's also a very weird game.

    In 2026 Devers has a .706 OPS and a 101 OPS+ and a 0.2 bWAR. Sox fans wouldn't be happy with that. Our offense is horrible and we're desperate. But Devers is not having much of a season.

    It's ownership, in my opinion. And it's hiring CBOs with zero experience, hoping to get lucky it seems.

    Very weak table-turner. For the record I don't really think you're a daytime drinker in spite of the bad comparison of Gray and Durbin to Harrison and Bregman.
