Roman better get his act together before I start up the Owen is the new Roman (Im not there yet)

Hull has a higher GB rate than Roman did at age 21. Maybe they can work on it over the winter.

For a guy who missed a lot of time due to injury, I'd say a .341 OBP is decent and a .400 SLG is a bit low but not bad.

.400 SLG is the league average. The league .318 OBP is 23 lower than Roman.

He doesn't even have 550 career PAs under his belt, and this is his line:

.272 BA (MLB .244)

.372 OBP (MLB: .316)

.435 SLG (MLB .402)

.807 OPS (MLB .718)

HRs per 162: 17

XBHs per 162: 60

There's a high likelihood Owen Hull never does what Roman is doing right now at the MLB level. Most prospects don't pan out.

Good job. Those percentages show he's not bad.

Now if Roman can become better than average in K-rate, he could become a star.

Right now, he's worse than average, which wouldn't be so bad if he batted 6th or 7th... but he gets up the most and somehow is always in the box in the middle of what could be rallies.

Just improve the OBP and SLG, and don't care if his K rate gets worse.

I realize it doesn't usually work that way, but I think we'll see Roman's power increase as he ages. Hopefully, it won't be that expense of his OBP..

Roman's power is already there. He's just hitting everything into the ground.

He'll probably just be streaky with it the way he was in '25. Maybe peaks at 25 HR. He has 40 HR power, but I don't think he gets there.

Colson Montgomery socked 31 HRs this year. His K-rate for the full season rounds to 36%.

Roman Anthony's K-rate for the full month of September rounds to 35%.

Monty also batted .197 and set a new MLB record with 227 strikeouts.

DD traded over 20 prospects that were once top 20. Some were....

1 Moncada

3 Espinoza

4 Margot

4 Webster

5 Kopech

5 Ranaudo

6 Guerra

8 Chatham

8 Scherff

11 Beeks

12 Basabe

13 L Allen

18 Dubon

19 Buttrey

I can't remember all 20+. Not many amounted to anything, but maybe the ones Brez traded won't either.

Brez also added Tolle, Bennett and some others we traded for good players.

2b Liendo

3b Winnay

SS Alcantara (based on leadership qualities)

OF Jackson, Opata, Gonzales

DH R Hernandez

P Delzine, Futrell, Gilman, Morgan, Wehunt, Brooks (noted high k rates for Gilman and Brooks)

The farm seasons are over, except for WOO.

soxprospects.com has next year's roster projections set up:

https://www.soxprospects.com/2027.htm

Some notables:

Crawford joins Paez, Wehunt, Holobetz and Ziehl in the Woo rotation. While that rotation looks decent for a AAA team, Crawford looks like the only meaningful ML-impact starter. They have Mullins as the #6, but maybe he gets moved to the pen. The pen has Bastardo, Gamboa, Smaniego, Rivera and Olds.

The everyday players at Woo look pretty decent, but with Duran, Jones, Yoshida, Eaton and Cheng listed in la-la land as bubble players, I'm going to push Monasterio, Gasper, Eaton & Cheng to AAA, making there roster look like this:

C: Jo Garcia, Nate Baez (H White/ GRod AA)

1B: Casas, Gasper (Hickey?)

2B: Seigler, Rodgers, McDonough (M White AA)

3B: Eaton, Romero (Winnay AA)

SS: Arias (MLB?) Liendo (Godbout AA)

LF: Castro (Gutierrez AA)

CF: Ward, Bleis (I Jackson AA)

RF: Campbell (Gonzales AA)

DH: Brannon (AA>AAA) or Jo Garcia/Casas/Gasper/Seigler (Ro Hernandez AA)

look at the projected AAA rotation i don't see any P to get excited about. I agree that Crawford is the most likely to see MLB time but our prospect pipeline on the bump seems like it about the same as it was 3 years ago.

I fully agree and am concerned, but think of the possible lack of need for a SP'er for 4-5+ years. We didn't have that 3 years ago or even ever. (Clemens, Hurst and Ojeda were just 3.)

2023's rotation:

Sale 1 yr $27M w option

Houck still being yanked between RP/SP & before nice '24 season (pre-arb)

Kluber 1 yr $10M

Pivetta 2 arb yrs left

Paxton 1 yr

Crawford & Bello unsigned/pre-arb

NOV '23 Rankings

1, Anthony

2. Mayer

3. Teel

4 Rafaela

5 Bleis

6 Yorke

7. Perales

8 Abreu

9 Wikelman

10 Cespedes

15 Drohan, 20 Monegro, 23 Dobbins, 24 E R-C, 26 Bastardo, 27 Mata

Now, 1-2 years ago our farm pitching was better, but many were obtained by Brez, some graduated, and some were traded for better pitchers like Crochet, Bennett and Gray.

We all know we will have injuries, so having 5 solid SP'ers under control for 4-6 years is no guarantee, but it should lessen the need for pitching prospects in teh near future, anyway.

6 yrs: Bennett (25 years old)

5 yrs: Crochet (27) & Tolle (23)

4 yrs: Suarez (30) +mutual option

4 yrs: Bello (27)

(2: Crawford and  1: Houck & Oviedo)

Current Ranked Prospects:

4 Valera (ETA 2029)

6 Delzine (2029)

20 Brown (2029)

15 Phillips 2028, 24 Monegro 2028, 30 LaFavor 2030

Morgan, Futrell, Finley, Mayers & others.

MLB Ready or near ready:

9 Holobetz, 13 Wehunt, 16 Paez. 21 Ziehl, 18 Bastardo, 23 Mullins, 24 Rivera

It's not even about the rotation TBH. They are no longer developing relief pitchers. The last reliever they signed/drafted and developed was Darwinzon Hernandez. They keep a lot of relief types in the rotation that flame out when they could be developed. They've sent others out for poor returns: Hoppe, Zef...

Good points. Some of these current SP'ers may make it as decent pen adds, but almost all our current pitching is from trades. Tolle and remnants from past GMs, like Houck and Crawford are about it.

sp.com had this to say about a young prospect few of us have talked about...

Outfield: Joskairo Ramirez
After signing for $800,000 in January, Ramirez was Boston's breakout star in the Dominican Summer League as he was named the organization's Latin Program Position Player of the Year. In 45 games, Ramirez slashed .320/.443/.553 with five home runs, 14 doubles, and nine stolen bases. The 17-year-old Ramirez is ranked as the No. 47 prospect in the system.

He's far away, but still...

Why is Mullins still starting? No way would he ever be in the BOS rotation! They are too slow to identify relief arms on the 5% chance that a guy may become a backend starter.

Aside from Tolle and Bello (?), there really isn't anything to crow about right now. They weren't using Wyatt Olds as a shutdown reliever in the playoffs due to his bb rate. They should have like 5-6 Olds!

I'm not getting excited about a DSL guy. Way too many have flopped coming stateside recently. If SP straps a rocket to him, it's the death knell.

Some points of note:

On the playoffs: missing our #3 and #4 leverage pen guys, and could not use Whitlock and Chapman for all 3 games, why not stick with the rotation that got us there? Of course, "We need hitting."

We should have handed Sogard the IKF role on opening day and saved $6M.

Durbin should bat 7-8-9 or be a top utility man. Rafaela & Story should never bat higher than 7-8-9. Abreu should bat 6th. (5th if the pitching & defense are top and we use them.) Mead is a total unknown & should DH.

Duran should not have been the wire-to-wire starter and there was no discussion of taking him out. They had a couple legit offers from him and the last two years.

We were lucky the Twins said no to Tolle & Arias. We shoulda signed Fried instead of trading for and extending Crochet. Some hindsight talk about how Hicks and Sandlin are pitching leverage innings for the CWS, and it was a salary dump trade.

Wong is no longer worth keeping as C#2. Monasterio is AAA and would be DFA'd when out of options. Mead should DH. Jones could platoon at DH, but did poorly at the end of the season. Eaton is AAA and out of options- "will be DFA'd." Brez will make some trades to clear up roster slots. Bastardo and Castro are minor league FAs and are part of the end of season choice needed to be made.

We had a lot of unsustainable players all get hot during that 37 game streak. We lose Gray, IKF and Sandoval. No way Gray takes $30M, with the $10M buyout. Everyone else comes back. Bello will be the #5 with Houck, Oviedo and Crawford as the depth. They all look healthy. Crawford will likely start in AAA on opening day. Oviedo is out of options due to 5 yrs. He will likely be in the pen, if nobody is injured. Rotation looks fine, but with not top pitching prospects looking even close to a mid rotation starter in the next 3-4 years.

The top 5 RP'ers look good, but all have questions, and Whitlock wants to start, again. We need to get one more good pen arm, but we probably won't. We need to be more aggressive moving farm arms to the pen earlier. The last good pen arms from the system were Barnes and Workman. They run out the clock on these guys who are still starters- like Mullins (2nd Rule 5 year.) "Monegro is not a starter." Mayers and Morgan, too. They just don't believe in developing RP'ers since covid. We shoulda kept Hoppe over 2-3 of the guys we kept. Carrying so many injured guys forced these choices. Moran didnt make playoff roster, so what is his worth?

This roster is just not worth the salary. Yes, Yoshida and Story eat a lot, but IKF, Campbell, Sandoval and others are wasted. We are at $216M pre arb adds, which will bring us to neat $270M, and the Duran choice seems like they will keep him. (Yuck!)

We must extend AR, but the situation is typical Sox. We have to extend him to make the trade worth it. We need to add a defensive catcher to replace Wong (save $2M arb.) Trade Duran for a prospect (save $8-9M.) ow will Story andle the Arias situation. If there is a lockout, Arias will be playing and sharp. Play Story at 2B or trade him. Mead would DH or play 1B when Willson leaves. We can't count on Arias to do well on offense out of the gate.

They mentioned that if there is a floor enacted, maybe some team takes Story or Yoshida with a prospect to meet the requirements. Trade Story, move Durbin to 2B and sign Sato from Japan? e might be the best offensive player on the market.

Rafaela is fine in CF, but only if he bast 7-8-9. Abreu could be traded, but then we'd need a RF'er. Anthony in RF or sign Suzuki? Being creative in the OF might be the best idea, they think. Some talk has been to just trade Anthony, but they don'tt hink it makes sense. Getting hurt just swinging the bat is very worrisome, and it's not just him with these sorts of injuries. Bold action is needed, so maybe trading Rafaela or Abreu is the best we can do.

They both still like Tracy as the 2027 manager.

Exactly. The podcast on SP.com mentioned Monegro & Morgan, too. They said we seem to stick with these guys who maybe have a 1-2% chance as a starter until their clock runs out. Teams like the Indians move pitching prospects to the pen and develop many good ones that slide right into MLB pen roles.

Someone the SP guys never mention is Ryan Fernandez. He was an easy Rule 5 addition a few years ago, but the Sox just decided to let him get drafted instead. He would have been much more valuable as an up and down guy than what we've used the past few years.

Monegro's stuff doesn't seem like it'll work at the MLB level.

Morgan hasn't been around long enough for me to know much about TBH. I wasn't able to watch many affiliate games this season so I feel like I'm behind on the 2025 draftees. Noll and SP are both mentioning Morgan, so we'll have to start paying attention to him.

Okay. At the AA-AAA level, who besides Mullins should be moved to the pen in 2027?

sp.com projected rotations: (Houck and Oviedo in MLB pen)

AAA: Crawford, Paez, Wehunt, Holobetz, Ziehl (They have Mullins in the pen)

AA: Monegro, Futrell, Brown, Phillips, Bouchard & McSweeney

FYI: A+ J Bello, Gilman, Morgan, Mayers, Finley, Foutch (podcast mentioned Morgan and Mayers to pen)

With how the BOS rotation currently looks, I may consider moving Holobetz to the pen in the short term too.

I'd add MiLB FA's to fill in the missing rotation spots and move the guys I listed to the pen. I really don't think any of those guys are on track to being MLB rotation pieces. Might as well put them in the pen now and maybe they can shoot up the system.

I agree. We may need 2 or 3 of the current AAA starters in that role on the big team, this year. Counting Crawford as ML depth, we have 8 guys. Maybe the better question is which 3 should join Crawford as AAA starters in 2027.

I kinda felt Paez would be the #9 after Crawford. If we decide to move Houck to the pen permanently, then Crawford would be 7 and Paez or someone else #8. I kinda felt Holobetz might be next in line, but maybe Wehunt or Ziehl are better options.

Of course, we can sign some AAAA/AAA starters, too.
