JH is getting better at "the game of sham."

He signs Bregman, then dumps Devers.

He signs Buehler to the highest AAV for a SP'er since Sale (who was an extension,) then DFA's him.

He seems to do just enough to keep the fans hopeful or just mildly angry. (Of course a few are very angry, but are there enough of them?)

If Buehler made anyone a believer in ST, Red Sox Nation is hopeless.

yes, in all cases.  Theres plenty of people who nobody expected to leave and did.

Even so, theres a difference between going after Schwarber and failing to convince him and losing out than just being okay with a lineup where nobody has an. 850 OPS.

Its the mindset.  When do we get to say enough with the mediocrity?

Out of curiosity, what do you consider competitive vs mediocrity?

Top 5 payroll, top 3 offense (or be trying to improve it), a lot of it is more effort than results for me. Certainly not rolling over Verdugo year after year becuase "but I wubbbbb him", certainly not refusing to sign elite hitters when you have 0 because you cant accept that you made a bad investment on yoshida.

Certainly not trying to fill every hole with bounceback candidates.

Since we cut back on payroll (and its not just payroll its also effort):

third / 5(2019)
last / 5 (2020)
second / 5 (2021)
last / 5 (2022)
last / 5 (2023
Third / 5 (2024)
Third / 5 (2025)

This is since theyve started being fine with just having mediocre players like Verdugo and Yoshida and why woudl we need Schwarber, weve got Yoshida and Casas!  Thats what youve been doing, third and last place finishes are what you are getting.  THe era of complacency!

Fix it and sign Schwarber or get boo'd forever.

He did seem like there was more hope than guys like Perez, Kluber, Richards, Paxton and others, but no high hopes.

There are significant drop offs after the top 6 budgets, so I'd say top 6 would be nice but maybe not essential. Top 8 is likely needed.

Top 5-6 in offense- measured by non park-influenced stats.

Top 5-6 in pitching.

Top 1o on defense would be nice but top 15 might be okay, if we are top 6 in pitching and batting.

Because of 10 IP during the playoffs apparently! It seemed dubious to me.

It was to me, but Buehler was 5-6 years younger than Kluber and 2-3 younger than Richards- maybe 50 years younger than Hill. They were all significantly long removed from greatness and had a major injury/surgery not long before the signing.

I do think they viewed Buehler as better, based on his double AAV as compared to Kluber and Richards and even Sandoval's AAV. Other than Gio's AAV, Buehler's deal seemed like a step up, at the time, but again it was just a 1 year deal and another can kicked down the road.

Nobody, absolutely nobody is saying we don't need Schwarber because we've got Casas and Masa. 🤦‍♂️

Do me a favour - give me the off season moves and roster it results in. I want to try and understand what you think we can do.

At least I know there's no point engaging any further on this topic. Thanks for that at least ha!

I wasn't being passive aggressive. It's just you've been arguing most of the day for Schwarber, but if you're not bothered about how the roster shapes up with him on there, then there's no point me being either (in response to your arguments).

No biggie.

Plus, I don't think there's any chance NYC go for him.

someone give me the btv on

Roman Anothy
Cedanne
Harrison
Garcia

for

Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte

I would think its like 70 for RA, 40 for Cedanne, 15 for Harrison, 15 for Garcia so around 140 and then Carroll would be like 100 and Marte would be like 50.

What do you mean "how the roster shapes out"

You build rosters top down. Not bottom up. You get the studs first.  If we have a hole or 2 thats fine, as long as we have the studs and schwarber is a stud.  Right now we have 0 (hitting wise, crochet is obvs a stud)

Posted

I dont build a team with 9 positions to check off, thats too old school minded.  I get the best 9 bats i can and figure it out, cuz thats roster building in 2025.

Posted

hitting (50%) = pitching (40%) + defense (10%)

that defesne can sink you, but you dont pass on the sixth best hitter in baseball (when you have 0 hitters in the top 50) because you are worried about ideal defensive alignment.

Schwarber transforms this team.

Again, this isn't fantasy baseball. Every move has ramifications. I wanted to see where you thinking was on how this roster works out once we sign Schwarber, and with it, close none of the three major holes we have. If you haven't thought about it, or don't want to, no bother, but it's the kind of thing I like to do, and understand that others have too. Just saying sign Schwarber is a nothing to me. I'm interested in what comes next, how it shapes up.

The difference in potency between schwarber and alonso is massive.  I would understand if htey were close but they arent.  Schwarber is a top 10 hitter, alonso isnt in my top 30.

Avoiding holes isnt as important to me as getting elite players.
