Kelly was good for such a small amount of time, but he gets bonus points for fighting. Still a bad trade. Craig was awful.

Okay, mister double standard. This gets credit? Joe got rushed and didnt look like he knew at all what to do in that situation nor really wanted to hang in bang....

VS

A guy who I cant get you to give credit to, a dude who actually wanted to fight. You see that slip? Thats boxing training.  Crisps teammates loved him at every stop, and he was so fan-friendly. And he was an underrated gamer.

The Laroche for Kotchman trade really pissed me off.

Especially because the stated rationale was La Roche was too good to be a backup, and we didnt have every day room for him (we did).  He went to have an OPS+ of like 150 after deadline deal and Kotchman had like an ops+ of 50.

Laroche had a few more very strong years following too.

We straight up traded a legit starting caliber very good ballplayer for a backup because Laroche was too good.

Acquiring Hosmer didn’t annoy me nearly as much as Bloom’s attempt to sell to the world that it solved anything…

Oh for sure.  Those "PR" moves. What bothers me the most is that it worked on some of my friends. Around this time last year, they were jumping for joy about bringing back James Paxton. Im like thats not a real move, Id legit rather have Paxton Crawford.  Or that second baseman Urias (?)

These arent real moves!  These are "now you cant say I did nothing" pretend moves.

LaRoche got 19 at bats for Boston in 2+ weeks because they were set at 1b (Youkilis) and DH (Ortiz) and LaRoche made a lot ($7mill back in 2009).  They dealt him for the cheaper Kotchman.

LaRoche also had career long battles with ADHD, which made him difficult to keep in as an unegaged bench player.  That affliction was a big part in his career ending prematurely and ultimately lead to the Sox acquiring Chris Sale…

Lowell was clearly washed in 2009 and Youk could have moved back to third.

LaRoche continued a very impressive and underrated career. He was on fire after we traded him in 2009.  ANd in 2012, he had that GG/SS combo. He was productive through his age 34 season.

None of this ever made sense.

Perfect technique by Kelly, who takes a guy right to the ground and pounds on him.

Coco Crap dodges a punch, barely registers with his punch and then is immediately thrown to the ground. Sad showing! Tim Anderson-esque?

Not sure how possible moving Youkilis back to third was.  He was OK there before, but the move back in 2011 proved disastrous defensively.  We built that team around the wrong Adrián…

First, the best Sox deadline deal was a "sell" trade ... by far the best was dealing Heathcliff Slocumb to the Mariners for Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek.  All other deadline deals pale in comparison.

Since Andersen for Bagwell (who was at Double A at the time, and Lou Gorman did not account for Bagwell playing in a pitcher's park at New Britain when considering his low homerun totals), my personal favorite for the worst deadline deal was Lester for Cespedes in 2014.  Now, this was not a bad deal if this were your fantasy league, and Cespedes was fine for Boston as a rental.  However, the deadline deal for Lester resulted in zero future value, which was astounding for a pitcher of his caliber.

The Gagne deal worked out poorly - but I had no issue with the process and there were not many signs that Gagne would totally forget how to pitch.

Every team that makes trades makes bad trades at some point.

The trading deadline hasn’t been too bad for Boston.  Bagwell for Andersen was 35 years ago.  What’s the worst one since?

rafy? mookie?

Mookie was most definitely not traded at the deadline.  Devers really wasn’t either but at least the season started…

Amen.  Schwarber was a huge pickup in 2021, also Eovaldi in 2018.

Mookie played 150 games for the Sox in 2019.

Devers was a special case.  Interestingly, he's hitting again in part because he is playing 1b for the Giants.

Indeed, I'd argue that the big mistake Boston made with Mookie was NOT trading him at the 2019 deadline.  If they really believed Betts was out the door, you trade from strength and look for a big haul coming back and create a bidding war.

Ownership bungled it in every way.  They knew Betts was out the door, they also knew trading him was going to be a PR disaster.  I believe they deliberately waited to trade him in 2020 until after a lot of 2020 season tickets had been sold.
