We don't know whether the Boston Red Sox will buy or sell at the end of the month, but there is no shortage of rumors going in either direction.

If they are looking to buy then their starting rotation will likely be one of their top priorities, if not THE top priority.. Jon Morosi of MLB Network is reporting that Joe Ryan is being monitored "by a number of teams" and specifically names the Red Sox as a potential suitor.

Ryan, 29, is having an impressive 2025 season. Through 18 games (17 starts), he boasts a strong 2.76 ERA over 104.1 innings pitched. His FIP stands at 3.25, suggesting his excellent ERA is well-supported by his underlying metrics. Ryan has maintained a high strikeout rate with 116 strikeouts against just 21 walks, resulting in an excellent strikeout-minus-wall rate of 23.4% He's consistently limited walks, contributing to a stellar 0.89 WHIP - third best in all of baseball. Despite all of that, he was not elected to the MLB All-Star game. He is controllable through the 2027 season.

What approach do you think the Red Sox should take at the upcoming trade deadline? Join the conversation in the comments!

Duran, Sandlin and another prospect like um... Mullins.

Brock proposed Duran as the centerpiece of a Ryan trade.   But if the Twins are trading Ryan, does he really make sense for them?

A third team (Philadelphia?) does change everything.

I still doubt Mullins is the final piece here…

As long as it's not Tolle, I don't care. He's the only near untouchable prospect to me. I'm not a huge Ryan guy, so I wouldn't include Tolle in that trade. In a trade for a guy like Skubal? I'm emptying the farm.

Ryan is 19th in fWAR from 23-25 and age 29. Valdez and Cease are both better and are FA this offseason. The other real swing and a miss was not signing Sonny Gray last season.

But would a Ryan-less Twins team want Duran?  They have outfielders with higher bWAR in LF (Bader) and CF (Buxton) already. Granted, Bader is only 0.1 better, but that still makes Duran an odd choice for an improvement.

Catcher, 1b and RF look like bigger needs.  SS, too, but they have plenty of cash tied up there.  And no, they don’t want Casas. Not for Ryan, anyway…

It is going to take pitching to get Ryan out of the twins dugout!!  We got Fitts, Tolle and Clarke that should be on the twins radar already!!!

I know you gotta give to get, but I'd avoid giving up any or our 5 rookies (Anthony, Mayer, Narvaez, Campbell & Dobbins) or Tolle to get him. They may hang up, if we deny them one. Twist my arm and it might have to be Dobbins from these 6 names. I might even want to trade Campbell before Tolle, but that might take more thought. His lack of position worries me. We have enough DHs.

How about this:

To PHI: Duran

To MIN: Abel

To MIN: Fitts, Arias, Early & Monegro

To BOS: Ryan

We keep all our top prospects, except Arias and maybe our top 3 pitching prospects, but MIN gets Abel & Fitts, a top SS prospect and two decent pitching prospects, too.

Is that enough?

If the Sox do this trade and extend Ryan, we'll look very well set up for a pretty long window, including several younger players at relatively low costs with upcoming arbs and reasonable extensions.

I've mentioned a few times - DD has been on record saying his starting pitchers aren't available. Now it could be a ploy to drive up price, either way - Duran isn't getting it done.
