There is being smart aggressive.

There is being dumb.

Really what matters is whether or not you’re out or safe. Aggressive baserunning by definition is taking more chances. Some of those will come back to haunt you.

But I think Cora seems to want this, which is why it happens a lot. And why Hamilton is still on this team…

When I say dumb, I mean too many thrown out at 3B, not running as fast as you can on hits, getting picked off due to lack of focus or just trying for an extra base with no chance of making it, unless it's a bad throw.

We have more than most teams on this; I'm convinced.

McGuire's steal of third base probably wasn't just a slow guy suddenly deciding to take off because he felt like it. There was one out, at the bottom of the order -- maybe the best time to swipe third and set up many more possibilities to score than on an extra-base hit: single, sac fly, sac bunt, grounder (to at least first, second and shortstop), error, wild pitch/pass ball/balk, etc.

That was a great swimming slide by Reese to make it, too.

Hey sometimes I think their logic is - you’ll never be safe on a bad throw if you don’t force them to make a throw…

Pickoffs are what irritate me. Against the Twins, I thought whoever got thrown out trying to get a double simply wasn't expecting the right fielder to be able to play that big wall the same way leftfielders play the green monster at Fenway. Plus my guess the Twins right field wall is further out than the green monster.

If you don't have a good hitting team, it might make sense to gamble a little more on the basepaths. But I honestly don't know if that's statistically true.

I don't mind taking chances and being aggressive.

To me, there is a pretty clear line between that and being just plain dumb.

GREAT win for the Sway Man, and the Bruins last night. C’s, and B’s on every night this week. What a good time to be a Boston sports fan. On a lesser note the Sox get to face Sale this week.

Absolutely. If you're safe it was smart and aggressive. If you're out it was dumb and reckless. :D

I know you are joking, but I really don't mind running into outs, being aggressive and challenging the defense to make a good play.

I'm not seeing a ton of real dumb running plays, this year, but it does seem like more than I see our opps making.

We have a lot of young players this year, too.

True. There are likely other factors involved, as well. Hopefully, we can lessen these blunders, going forward.

We seem to walking a tightrope, this year, so it seems important we minimize unforced errors and instances of mental lapses, if we are going to have a shot at something special, this fall.

At the start of the season, we thought we'd need an amazingly good season of health and a large majority of things "go right" for us. We had many players with serious upside, but so many had huge question marks for one reason or another. So far, we have had something like 16 players go on the IL, some for the whole year or a large chunk of it.
