When John Henry bought the Red Sox, he was determined to compete with the Yankees, to beat the Yankees. Now, he doesn't seem to care.

Yanks came into the offseason with a glaring need in the rotation and offense. They shored up the offense. They added Stroman. In getting Soto, they weakened the pen by dealing their depth and Michael King, who was a lights out reliever. They saw Wandy Peralta, their defacto closer from last year, walk for a reasonable sum. They were linked to every pen arm and have landed none. For a team with multiple star players on their walk year, this team feels unfinished with a weakened pen. It’s like building a beautiful penthouse by stealing from the support beams. The cheapest part of the team was left thin. We have the kids to fill in, but they’ll take their lumps in the meantime, something we don’t have the luxury of in a division that’s a total buzzsaw.

As always, the Yanks look good on paper, when everyone is healthy and playing a full season.

 

There is absolutely no reason to expect that to happen. In fact, one could or maybe even should expect more and more missed time, as so many key players are at the end of prime or post-prime. Almost all their key players are aging.

 

Judge turns 32, soon, and plays a very demanding position, especially at Yankee Stadium. Since 2018, he has missed more than 30% of possible games played in 4 out of 6 seasons.

 

Stanton is now 34. His OPS has decline, every season, since 2019 and was .695 in 2023. (.729 from 2022-2023.) He's played over 110 games, once since 2018.

 

LeMahieu turns 36 in July. He has a .720 OPS, over the last 3 years. He's no longer the .922 hitter he was the first 2 years w NYY. He's also has not played over 136 games, the last 2 years.

 

Rizzo turns 35 in August. He's had a couple decent years since his last big year in 2019, but he's a .768 first baseman in the last 3 years. His games played have steadily declined from 157>153>146>141>130>92.

 

Cole turns 34 in September. He's been a horse over the last 7 seasons. Nobody has started more games, in the last 7 years (206.) There is no reason to think that changes, but he is getting older.

Rodon is 31. It's well-documented, that this guy is injury prone.

Stroman turns 33 in May. He has a pretty decent history of not missing too many starts, but he's only gone more than 139 IP, once in 6 years (twice in 8 years), and that was just 179 IP in 2021.

Kahnle turns 35 in August.

Nestor is only 28, but he's only had one good, full season (2022.)

 

The Yanks have a lot of big question marks, as do many teams. They won 82 games, last year, and it took a late season collapse by the Sox for them to not finish in last place. They've made some huge moves, unlike the Sox, but the Soto trade hurt them in other areas, and they lost a couple other key players, too.

King is one guy that makes for a BTV-acceptable trade for Duran that makes sense for both teams.

 

Trade values on that site are almost identical. Duran, a SoCal native, easily fits into the San Diego outfield that, per Roster Resource, will be starting Jesus Azocar and non-roster invitee Cal Mitchell. And adds a let-handed bat to a lineup that really only has Cronenworth. (Mitchell is technically left-handed, but has almost no MLB track record.) Rhode Island native and BC alum King easily slips into the Sox rotation ahead of Houck, Whitlock and Winckowski.

 

The big issue in my eyes is Duran has 5 years of control left while King has only two...

I am still figuring out the pen for this team.

 

I like the Trivino signing, but he realistically won't be an option until close to the ASB. Effross is out until mid season. I love the Ferguson trade. Holmes, Loaisiga, and Kahnle make for a nice bridge but the latter two seem to be regulars on the IL. Hamilton was awesome last year, but he missed a large chunk of the year as well. Marinaccio will be looking for a rebound and Beeter could be the electricity the team needs at first sign of distress, but what was a strength is now looking like a potential minus. Letting Wandy go for such cheap money looks like a bad choice at this time

Non surgical rehab always makes me nervous as wasted time now means wasted time in 25. That being said, the inflammation is coming from microtears somewhere. Hopefully reactive bone/slight ligament strain.

 

That being said, we cannot go into 2024 (a true all in year) with this rotation minus Cole. The season starts in 2 weeks. Cole may be “out” for 12 weeks and by the time he ramps up, it’s the ASB. It’s time to pay Montgomery

Not surprising. He won’t be on the IL long. The issue here is our backup plan is also on the IL in Peraza. Probably gotta carry Cabrera and have him play 3b until DJ returns

Kyle Higashioka 1.0 WAR with a 115 OPS+, a better offensive player than Wells and Trevino

Michael King 1.8 WAR with 120Ks in 105IP, will not be a free agent until after the 2026 season

Drew Thorpe dominant in AA this year, now in the majors. Ranked as the 7th best RHP prospect in MLB. Now on the White Sox (part of the package that brought back Dylan Cease).

 

The Padres also acquired Jhony Brito and Randy Vásquez in the Soto trade, two very mediocre pitchers so far.

 

The Padres did a nice job in acquiring all of this for only one year of Juan Soto.
