If they sign Yamamoto and Montgomery, and get a competent bat for 2B, you can squint and see a contender.

Agreed, if they sign Moto and Monty, Full Throttle is on.

Yes, 3 of the original top 6, which leaves only 3.

Nola was never even an option. Gray is a graybeard. They need to get a young guy with upside, not another old-timer with possible age related decline.

By bidding a couple $million more or adding length.

I have to think the Yanks want to extend Soto. They will have Judge, Soto and Cole on their books. I doubt they are thinking, "We will pay whatever it takes for Yamo."

It's hard to know how Cohen feels after getting bitch-slapped by his overpays, last winter.

No, it's not hard to know at all. Cohen flew to Japan to meet Moto in person. He's all in.

The only way the Sox can sign Moto is if he really prefers Boston to NY for some reason.

I'm thinking it may have taken more years and money to bring him back to the AL East after that horrible Yankees experience, but that's just me spitballing.

I try not to dabble in psychotherapy.

Not specifically, just that grab bag as a whole. I'd be fine with Stroman or Wacha as our #2 acquisition if they come with Moto or Snell-or Monty, at least.

Yes, Yamamoto PLUS!

I saw an interview with him really laying into the Yankees for f***ing with his pitch mix. That's where I get it from, but it was probably not a factor.

"All in" does not mean he'll go to $1billion.

Every owner has his limit. We don't know his or JH's on Yamo.

Cohen could pivot to Monty & Snell, if the price gets too high.

Is that indicative of all East Coast teams then?

He didn't fare very well overall during his East Coast days is what I'm trying to get at.

Money.

Steve Cohen has a net worth of 19.8 billion and is borderline crazy.

He's the one owner who's willing to reach into his own pocket to fund the payroll.

So if it's down to money, we have no chance.

What's your point? You posted a question, and I replied.

My point was when you looked at that roster last March, you probably didn’t see a clear “ace” or a 100 win team…

You don’t get young guys with Upside via free agency. Not normally, anyway.

And if you look at the best starting pitchers the Sox have acquired over the last half century, they have had much more success in the trade market over free agency…

SO considering their needs, you're saying the fact that some guys that don't fit the mold of what the Sox need have signed is not that important?

Easier to park a car in Boston…

That's true, but there's some randomness in there. One of those trades was for a guy in his late thirties, Schilling.

None of the guys who have signed fit your criteria, yes.

Who had upside? Nola? Maeda? ERod? Gray?

Ok maybe ERod. Maybe…

Yeah but Curt was the finishing touch on a team a win away from the WS the season prior.

But who were the premier free agents?

That Lackey makes the list proves my point…

ERod strikes me as a Verdugo type with non baseball baggage.

Fair. On the other hand, of the two I think Verdugo is more likely to cover first base on a grounder to the right side…

Was the Lackey signing good, bad or somewhere in between? That's a discussion in itself. Might have been no ring in '13 without him.

Why didn't he sign the top 10 FAs, last year?

He does have limits and preferences. It does appear he really wants Yamo, so I do think the Mets have an edge, but there has to be a point, where Cohen and the GM say, we can get more for our money, elsewhere, and walk away from the bidding war.

I just think Henry is likely to reach that point sooner than Cohen.

I agree, but I do not think it's NOT a slam dunk.

The Mets might be thinking option B is better, and it costs Cohen more money... which he has.

A. $250M/10 for Yamo

vs

B. $200/7 Snell + $100M/5 Imanaga

I guess we should just hang it up and never expect to win another WS then...

I'm convinced that the only way we get Moto is if he decides he prefers Boston. If he wants to play in NY, we might as well forget it.

Well, that's a bit of a leap. Maybe Moto wants to play in Boston. If not there's Snell, Montgomery etc.
