Eovaldi vs Crawford

Nate should receive a warm reception from the Fenway faithful this evening. And well-deserved because EO always gave 100% on the mound and is a great competitor.

That being said let's kick his ass tonight.

Duvall is the only SOX player that has faced him; Duvall has 3 AB's against him.

Go SOX!

That's kind of incredible.

Nate's best season ever if he keeps this up. His last start was vs the Astros on July 1: 7 IP, 0 ER, 4 BB, and 5 K. To date he's had 17 starts and 10 quality starts.

Against Gray last night Cora sent out:

Duran LF

Yoshida DH

Turner 1B

Devers 3B

Dugo RF

Duvall CF

Arroyo 2B

Hamilton SS

Wong C

5 lefty and 4 righty bats and no Casas. I think we are likely to see the same lineup tonight because they are the best defense Cora can muster plus some pretty good bats. Arroyo, Hamilton, and Wong combined for 4 hits last night and all are plus defenders.

Hamilton at shortstop -- super quickness, shaky throws -- is how I imagined Story there, as described by Bloom in this paraphrase: "His elite speed will compensate for any arm issues."

Just make sure Turner (nice pick on a bounced throw last night) or Casas give each other enough rest in between stretches at first.

Right now I favor Turner over Casas because it allows Cora to DH Yoshida. Plus Turner hits righties better than Casas.

Even I hit righties better than Casas

You don't hit anyone better than anyone. Put some respect on my homeboy's name

I was a base stealer, so when I played, I hated facing lefties. Had to make sure they were actually going home rather than trying to pick me off

So 28 year old Wyatt Mills has TJ surgery July 5, rendering him out for the rest of '23 and all of '24 most likely. Another potential pitcher on the forever IL list. Wyatt will not be the new sheriff in Beantown , and never even pitched in a single regular season game.

Caleb Hamilton, also 28, who distinguished himself by K'ing every single AB for the MLB club in '23 finds himself DFA'ed. His pro career is in need of a another team, although he might accept the demotion back to WooSox if unclaimed.

So who is the backup to Wong until McGuire gets healthy ? He is still exhibiting some soreness in his oblique and not yet bat swinging, which is how he self injured. The replacement is our old friend Jorge Alfaro who opted off the WooSox roster to go to Colorado Rockies for a quick trial confirming his limited abilities , so he comes back to the Red Sox organization to further show the same. Alfaro went 5 for 31 in Colorado, but the 5 hits consisted of 4 doubles and a HR, so there is some pop. Bloomie can sure pick'em.

In unrelated news Alex Cora shows he can still pick at 2B by working the DP with Trevor Story as TS continues his comeback practice at SS

Before anyone asks I have no idea why Duran isn't in the line-up.

Showcasing Duvall for the trade deadline and hoping he hits something.

He had both Duvall and Duran, CF and LF, in the lineup last night. Tonight Yoshida is in LF, Turner is DH, and Casas is at 1b. Duvall and Dugo stay in CF and RF. So it sure looks as though the Casas bat is replacing the Duran bat.

However, Duran right now has the best OPS, .889, on the team against righties. Casas's OPS vs. righties is .726. Plus Duran has the hot bat and Casas is 2 for 14 in his last 5 games.

That said, my memory of Eovaldi is that he has pretty good heat. Maybe Casas is the better fastball hitter.

Last season Alfaro was the backup catcher for San Diego, played in 82 games, and had a WAR of +0.7--on a Padres team that went 89-73 and made the playoffs and lost to the Phillies in the NLCS. Alfaro did not see action in the playoffs. Better Alfaro than Hamilton.

Does Devers get bonus money for catching extra popups in traffic? That's the second one in like 3 games when he was where he didn't need to be.

Crawford not real sharp, this one could get away if he delivers a HR

Works his way out of the mess, a good sign for young pitchers, as with Bello

No Sox player named Hamilton has an rbi in 2023

In fact 15 K's in 33 AB's combined

Once again 2 on, no outs, 3-4-5 coming up. Nate not sharp . Red Sox need to quit specializing in LOBsters

Crawford has been pitching up in the zone and getting hit. Bello kept it notably lower. But Kutter has been dodging the harmful hit
