Chaim Bloom on the trade deadline: “When you’re in the position we’re in now and you start selling out for rentals, that often doesn’t go well…Our North Star is just . . . continuing to build our core”

Wocka Wocka Wocka!

Does the name Kyle Schwarber ring a bell, Chaim? Loosen up, man!

our core is about 1-2 years too young to be in a 2021 position right now. They're figuring it out rapidly but would benefit from another year before trying to go all in.

When these guys do get it alltogether it's gonna be a hell of a thing, and they're really close. Seeing a lot of flashes of the kind of team they will be. If we get 75th percentile luck we could win it this year. I just don't think you could count on that.

Agree on defending Bloom. Less sure of the near future because of the rotation. Bello has been excellent, but ain't no one behind him in the Sox system. Instead, we have Sale, Houck, Whitlock, and Kluber on the IL--and of those 4 only Sale has looked like a real starter. Kluber is over the hill, and Houck and Whitlock were more effective in the bullpen.

I loved Kyle and wished Bloom would have kept him. Right now, however, not so much.

He's got those dingers and rbi's, but the Phillies offense stinks despite all the money DD has spent. They have the same W-L record (54-47) as the Sox--but in a much weaker division than the AL East and despite having the 4th highest payroll in MLB.

Well, if you don't count the whole NL pennant thing.

Kutter Crawford exists. I think he has #3 ceiling, which is exactly what we'd need him to be. A big budget team can usually figure out the bottom of the rotation as long as the first 3 spots are solid. If Kutter can round into the shape I think he's capable of, we should be there.

Will cost too much. The strength of the Sox system is 2B/SS so it doesn't make a ton of sense to spend capital to bring a struggling player to fill those roles.

689 OPS since June 1

We need a legit proven 2B. He is under control the next 3-4 years? He is a legit 2B with great defense and speed who gets on base very often. I say give up some of those prospects and land him.

If we're that desperate for a middle infielder, why not call up Rafaela and see what we have there? Costs us nothing.

Red Sox

@RedSox

The #RedSox today acquired RHP Mauricio Llovera from the San Francisco Giants, in exchange for minor league RHP Marques Johnson.

To make room for Llovera on the 40-man roster, the club transferred RHP Kaleb Ort to the 60-Day Injured List.

BREAKING: The Los Angeles Angels are finalizing a deal to acquire right-hander Lucas Giolito and right-handed reliever Reynaldo Lopez from the Chicago White Sox for catcher Edgar Quero and left-hander Ky Bush, two top prospects, sources tell ESPN.

don't we have some young stud named York in our system to play 2B?

Maybe we should trade Mayer to get Stroman from the Mets?

Yeah, it’s always a great idea to trade a top 10 prospect in all of baseball for a dude whose turning 33 and has an opt out after the season!

You would have India through 2026, but are paying for a guy who has only put up 1.6 fWAR since 4/1/22.

His -19 DRS and -12 OAA is 2nd worst in MLB at 2B from 22 - 23. I can't say that's a "legit" 2B. Unfortunately, his arm isn't strong enough to be moved to 3B either as it's worse than any current MLB 3B.

Even in his rookie year, he rated out as the worst rated OAA 2B.

I actually kind of agree with Dojji that bringing up Rafaela and putting him at 2nd could be an idea if the trade market doesn't shake down.

Bloom made his statement about the rent-a-player and he is right to a degree. Yes, the Sox made the Schwarber deal - but I do think the Sox were interested in Schwarber returning. Good on the team for making buying a possibility.

They also did not give much up for Schwarber.

They aren't going to bring up Rafaela before he's ready. Story is going to be up pretty soon. They are going to keep Chang/Reyes/Arroyo around for 2B. Rafaela's best skill is playing CF. Defense at 2B is diminishing his overall value. It could make more sense if they saw him as a lengthy fill in at SS, but I think they want to give him time in AAA.

This is probably right ... he is definitely the best CF in the system.

India has legit proven that he sucks.

With the deadline coming closer, Chaim Bloom says the Red Sox won’t think in terms of buy/sell but rather the “North Star” of continuing to bolster an increasingly promising core. That could mean… a lot of things.

They aren't going to do s*** at the deadline.

Speed?

Negative career BsR. 26th in Sprint Speed for 2B. Slower than Michael Chavis.

@ChrisCotillo

What did Chaim Bloom learn from Boston's weird 2022 trade deadline?

"Chances are, whatever you do when you're in that position, you're not going to get in. That was the fact we were looking at."

If you go by BTV, do the math...

Current Value of 2 month Rentals

9.7 Giolito CWS

8.8 Montgomery STL

8.5 Snell SDP

6.1 Stroman CHC

5.7 ERod DET

2.1 W Miley MIL

Current value of possible return players:

9 Alcantara & Romero

6 Paulino

5 Drohan

4 Perales, Wikelman, EValdez & Walter

3 Meidroth & E R-C

2.5 Hickey & Brannon

2.4 Abreu, DHam, Jordan & Monegro

2.2 Bastrado, Mata & Murphy

2.1 Encarnacion

2.0 Guerrero, Castro, Refsnyder, Bonaci, Fernandez, Blalock & Lugo

There should be no need to trade "prized prospects" for any of these rentals listed.

I would probably not trade Romero for any of them, but it might take that.

Giolito is off the boards, and is an example of how a very good rental SP'er might cost a top Sox prospect, according to what values BTV had on the two prospects headed to CWS.

That trade also shows how deals can get done ahead of the wire. (We need a starter before the deadline day.)

The two prospects had approximately the same value as Yorke and Romero per BTV. Kind of a steep price IMO.
