I have to say the Kluber save is one of the most horrific statistics that shouldn't be recorded (automatic rule on last 3 innings) in the history of MLB. You should not get rewarded for getting bombed.

You shouldn’t get a save for “protecting” a ten run lead…

Completely agree. That said, however, you cannot convince me Kluber was not useful last night because he was. Cora recently commented that the Sox were again screwed by the schedule when they had to play a double header Sunday vs the Yankees and the next day start a 4 game series in Minnesota. That put extra pressure on the Sox bullpen. Enter Kluber who ate 3 innings last night when it was clear Cora did not want to use his good relievers, especially with a 10-0 lead.

Also this. Kluber is in fact on the active freaking roster. Whether or not he is traded or DFA'd or whatever, right now he needs to contribute in ways they help the club. And that's exactly what he did last night.

By the way, have you forgotten the 2018 postseason in which our great closer Kimbrel gave up runs right and left? His ERA was 5.91, but he still got 6 saves.

Nothing wrong with using Kluber for three innings in a blowout. No sense in using the better relievers in that game. As for him getting credit for a save, that is just a fluky part of the save rule. It should be changed , but it really doesn't matter. He is not going to get a lot of legitimate save opportunities.

Sox have tried all season to deal him. They’ve had no takers. If they have one now, the return will be meager at best.

I agree, but it is possible we have been offered something pretty good, but B loom wants more.

Duran has been outstanding, Yoshida clearly a great signing--there I said something nice about Bloom.

Jansen & Martin?

Turner & Duvall?

Schreiber & Refsnyder?

Wong & McGuire?

Wink & Bernardino?

The Chang, Reyes and Tapia dumpster dives?

No more love to share?

i'd give him some love, if they weren't continually in last freakin' place.

Kind of a classic exchange about Bloom right here.

Indeed. I still think the moves he made before 2022 should have produced better results than the ones before 2021.

The moves before this year, when taken one by one, look even better, except for the lack of attention to the rotation and getting the one signing there horribly wrong.

The reliance on older vets, most with injury histories and younger unproven talent, as well as converted relievers to cobble together a rotation looked, on paper, like a bold gamble not likely to pay off, and yet for over a month now, we've used a revolving door of SP's due to injuries and the demotions of Kluver and Pivetta and seen quite stunning success.

The big question is, can they keep this up?

Earlier this year, I spoke to the need to start focusing on quality over quantity, but that maybe, just maybe, this group of SP'ers did have enough "quality" to make the quantity an asset. The jury is still out on that one, but somehow, the rotation has produced for over a month and is nearing the point where it has been good for longer than bad or mediocre.

If every SP'er was healthy, big if, I know, can we even be sure what the starting 5 would have been to start the season?

Sale

Paxton

Whitlock

Kluber

Pivetta

No Bello?

Houck, Crawford and Wink in the pen is pretty certain.

Cora did not really have to choose who to start, much, since Paxton, Whitlock and Bello started the season injured or recovering.

We started with...

Kluber, Sale, Houck, Crawford, Pivetta (2 rotations before Whitlock replace Crawford)

Kluber, Sale, Houck, Whitlock, Pivetta (one rotation before Bello was added

Kluber, Sale, Houck, Whitlock, Pivetta, Bello (two rotations with 6 men before Whitlock went on the IL)

Kluber, Sale, Houck, Pivetta, Bello (3 rotations before Paxton/Whitlock replaced the demoted Kluber/Pivetta)

Sale, Houck, Paxton, Whitlock Bello (one rotation before Sale went on IL)

Crawford, Houck, Paxton, Whitlock, Bello (Dermody got a start & Ort started a DH'er) This rotation has gone through 3 times.

Total GS: (Red: not intended to be in the starting rotation)

13 Houck

11 Bello

11 Sale

9 Kluber

8 Whitlock

8 Pivetta

7 Paxton

6 Crawford

1 Ort & Dermody

32 starts in RED with more to come.
