May as well start it.

SoxProspects just added scouting reports for the guys picked up in the Rule 5 draft.

Joe Jacques: https://www.soxprospects.com/players/jacques-joe.htm

93mph FB, slurvy breaking ball, lanky lefty specialist, struggles with RHB

Ryan Miller: https://www.soxprospects.com/players/miller-ryan.htm

95mph FB, curve, change, indy ball plus injuries and reverse split last season, misses bats but gives up hard contact

I doubt we see much change from the EOY to BOY rankings, unless we trade a top prospect or add one, but I like our farm's improvement.

We recently graduated Whitlock & Houck (mid '21) and Bello, Wong, Crawford, Wink, Duran and Ort in '22. Our top orpsects now are...

1. Mayer

2. Casas (soon to graduate)

3. Bleis

4. Rafaela

5. Yorke

6. Mata

7. Romero

8. Walter (26 years old)

9. Anthony

10. Perales

11. Paulino

12. Wikelman

13. Murphy

14. Lugo

15. Jordan

16. Bonaci

17 E Valdez

18. Hickey

19. Rodriguez-Cruz

20. Kavadas

21. Coffey

22. Seabold (26)

23. Downs (I knew he was overrated)

24. German

25. Drohan

26. Kelly (27 yrs old)

27. RoHern (25)

28. Abreu

29. Brannon

30. Paez

31. Uberstine

32. Hamilton

The only thing that will force a change before the season is if the guys see considerable improvement in ST for someone or if they get eyes on someone they haven't really been able to scout in person before and it changes their opinion.

@chadjennings22

It’s not only Jeter Downs.

The Red Sox have traded for 25 minor league players in the past three years. They’re still waiting to get more than modest major league help from any of them, and none currently rank among their very best prospects.

What trade acquisitions could help the MLB team this year?

Wong - back up catcher, but his bat could play up at some point

Winckowski - arm would look much more potent in a relief role

Valdez - maybe he has a chance to play some 2b? it's not like there's much competition

Seabold - not really seeing it, but he had a great changeup at one point

German - if he develops a secondary pitch he becomes a late inning arm right away

RHernandez - depth catcher at best, not even the 3rd option though, bat didn't develop

Abreu - bb's, corner OF with plus arm, power bat are some of the needs this team has, but he's a late season addition at best

The list is not pretty. Many of the trades we acquired prospects for included getting a MLB player attached (Ottavino & German/ Cordero w Wink & 4 long shots/ Hosmer with Ferguson & Rosier/ Pivetta w Seabold/ JBJ with Binelas & Hamilton and Downs & Wong w Verdugo.)

Only the Valdez & Abreu for Vaz deal looks like a straight MLB for only prospects deal that might add value.

The Waiver, Rule 5 and Minor FAs additions looks better:

Whitlock

Schreiber

Refsnyder

Kelly

I forgot Hamilton. He has an outside chance at providing value at the end of the year because of his speed and the position he plays. However, his upside is much lower than the other guys I mentioned. Binelas isn't even a consideration at the moment.

Is Wallace now ahead of Binelas?

@SoxProspects

Matthew Lugo went 3-for-5 with a double (3), home run (6), and four RBI in last night's 12-3 Criollos de Caguas victory. The 21-year-old infielder has slashed .248/.336/455 over 117 PA in Puerto Rico this Winter. He's #14 on the #SP60.

Wallace is more likely to get a cup of coffee. Binelas really needs to turn it around. He was awful last year.

I did like Wallace. I prefer him over Wyatt Mills…

Mills did not do too well in AA (1.30 WHIP) but was sharp in AAA (0.995 with a 13.1 K/9 rate.)

I won't mention his MLB numbers in 42 IP.

In his last 10 games of the season he had a 3.18 ERA, 3.29 FIP, .612 OPSa.

It's time for Bloom to start hitting on a higher percent of deals like this. I realize this isn't the type of deal that is going to move mountains, but the flashpoint I spoke of is upon him.

Zero pitchers in the top 5? Pitiful!

I think mata becomes the 2023 version of Bello.

I think Bleis end 2023 in Greenville?

I think Murphy gets innings in Boston in 2023.

I think Paulino is the 2023 version of refeala!

So, if Bello didn't advance so quickly and graduate, we'd have a top 5 pictcher.

Mata is close enough to count. Walter, Perales & Wikelman have hopes, and we have some very young pitchers on the rise.

I could see all five getting time Boston considering how frail sale and Paxton are, and how overused our bullpen will be by July.

We saw how long the adjustment period was for Bello. Do we get mata in the rotation as soon as possible this year?

Mata may get his first look in the pen.

He may not need as much "adjusting," but his ceiling is lower than Bello's, IMO.

Start the freaking clock! Who cares about five years down the road, when they're all going to be either locked up on modern moderate salaries or dealt because they turned into really good players who will be too expensive for Boston Market to keep.

He has a high BB rate which makes that FIP a lot higher than you'd like to see.

Yes. He's probably our 7th or 8th RP'er in 2023.

Maybe they think they can tweak something to help him improve. Other teams seem to do that all the time, and we do have the Schreiber example on our side.

You have a point here. Hang’em Chaim appears to believe in roster churn. The bulk of his deals are either 1 or 2 year deals.

I think that has been more out of necessity. Since the end of March, we've seen:

$140M/6 Story

$90M/5 Yoshida

$32M/2 Jansen

$17.5M/2 Martin

Maybe a 2 year deal for Kluber and or Andrus is in the works.

He might have as good a chance as any to win the 8th RP'er slot, but having an option probably means he begins the season in AAA, and so would be slotted 9th or lower, officially.
