He's not a top 10 closer anymore, but he's better than what we had. It's clear that they weren't comfortable handing it over to Whitlock or Houck for whatever reason. My guess is Jansen starts as the closer and then over the course of the next two years, it's shared with the younger dynamic arm of Bryan Mata who becomes fulltime closer in 2025.

Pretty close to top 10, but I think you are right.

2021-2022: 158 RP'ers with 80+ IP

1st in saves 79

12th in fWAR 2.9

63rd in xFIP 3.76 (Martin is 11th

I'd rather have an average or better than average closer than no closer, which is how it's been since Kimbrel left.

Me, too. I like the signing- and Martin, too. Not sure about Joely, but we needed a lefty.

If Houck stays in the pen and his healthy, out pen is now a strength.

I was just listening to a pod cast and Jansen has a couple issues he needs to deal with, one is he holds the major league record for highest steal rate, of 103 attempts 96 were successful and he is also the slowest pitcher to deliver the ball to the plate last year. With the rule changes and bigger bases the base paths got shorter and now have a pitching clock, these things could possibly be a problem and one of the reasons we were able to sign him. I really hope it doesn’t play out that way I liked the deal

Jansen’s issues with the pitch clock are a bigger deal. Last year he averaged 31 seconds per pitch. The new clock will be 20 seconds..

I do like the bullpen. The rotation still needs help. And Sale, for once…

15 seconds with no one on and 20 with men on base

That could be deceiving. Some closers , if they have more than a one run lead , will pretty much ignore the baserunner. Just focus on the batter.

A lot of times those don’t count as stolen bases, either…

Proven Closer obtained. Expensive but it's only for 2 years. Hard to see any downsides in this unless he falls off a cliff. But usually pitchers age better than position players. I mean look at Mariano Rivera. I'm not saying Jansen is on that level, but he should still be pretty good for at least 2 more years. Here's hoping!

To me Bloom is desperate. Jansen is nothing but a free falling in my book. Horrible signing. It’s still early and Hopefully I’m wrong but this team is not shaping well —thus far.

No Idea. A poster on this forum or your typical Sunday Baseball column from a Boston journalist?

I can see why somebody might see this move as a little risky because of the age of the player, but like I said pitchers tend to age better than position players in terms of maintaining performance.

So NOW who’s gonna start at second base!??!

Story should still start at 2b though and the Sox should find a temporary SS solution IMO.

I agree.

Andrus over the idea of Segura with Story at SS.

I also want to keep Kike in CF, not SS.

@tylermilliken_

There was lots of talk about the pitch clock possibly hurting Kenley Jansen, but it looks like it’s done the complete opposite.

AVG Velo from 2022 -> 2023:

Sinker -93.6 MPH -> 95.9 MPH

Cutter - 92.2 MPH -> 95 MPH

Slider - 81.2 MPH -> 83.5 MPH

Don’t see that too often at 35.

He's been good so far. Lots of Braves fans were saying that we'd regret the signing, but I would have been even been ok with a diminished Kenley Jansen.

Those Braves’ fan didn’t watch Jake Diekman try to close out games…
