I'm actually looking forward to at least two (maybe one) new acquisition Bloom specified in the presser: catcher and home run hitter.

Hard to imagine $20M per for Willson Contreras, 30, who the Cubs already said they're giving a QO... not when the Sox need to first pay aces to throw to him.

Will the M's lock up Cal Raleigh, 25, this winter?

Will Bloom trade Franchy and Winckowski for Sal Perez, 32, who's only owed $75M... if KC throws in a young pitcher?

The Blue Jays' top prospect is a catcher, and they have Captain Kirk, All-Star. Can the Sox at least get Danny Jansen, 27 -- just so they don't have to face him anymore (Jansen has career highs: 9 HRs, 30 RBIs vs. Boston)...

You’re very into adding dead people this off-season. Will the Professor be warming up Lefty Grove? Will there be budget left to sign Ross Youngs for RF?

It is spooky season right now.

I'm not so sure they go large at catcher. I think they just add someone like McGuire or Stallings, and have Wong in AAA as depth.

Pitching, SS, Pitching, RF, Pitching are out top priority.

If we have anything left over... more pitching.

That just means Mike Zunino.

Any interest in 31-year-old Seattle catcher Tom Murphy, who in 2019 posted 3.2 fWAR in only 76 games before being slowed by injuries the last three seasons?

Murphy, who in 14 games this year posted 0.5 fWAR and a 168 wRC+, is projected to earn $1.7 million next season in the second-to-last year of team control.

BTV values Murphy similar to RHP Connor Seabold. Deal?

Give 'em a choice: Wink or Seabold

I might give 'em both, but I don't know much about Murphy and his intangibles as a catcher.

Given the pitching depth in the Seattle organization, a pitcher would be an unlikely target.

Baseball Trade Values accepts a trade of two years of Alex Verdugo for two years of Tom Murphy but the Red Sox can ill-afford to deplete their outfield corps.

No organization thinks they can't add pitching depth, but with 40 man roster issues, it's not likely Wink or Seabold are better than your bottom of the 40 pitcher.

How about McDonough?

I'd give Duran, who has twice the BTV value.

Well, the Sox can afford to deplete it a little.

For example, BTV also accepts a deal of Jarren Duran for Paul Sewald, in a move that makes sense for both teams. Except Seattle.

The thing is, should Boston really be trying to bolster their backup catcher corps. McGuire is already in Boston, is even cheaper than Murphy, is controlled longer, and was worth 0.9 bWAR in 36 games…

BTV Catcher Values

6.5 McGuire (Diekman is at -4.0)

3.0 Murphy

2.5 RHern

1.9 Wong

1.7 Hickey (pretty far away)

1.4 Lira

1.3 Marcano

0.2 Cottam

Duran and Wink (or Chris Murphy) for Sewald & Murphy

Where you been, man? The Red Sox just nabbed catcher Caleb Hamilton from the Twins... although unfortunately they had to DFA Almonte, a guy they valued more than Plawecki, when he got cut.

Hamilton should fit right in with what they're looking for; mixed in among his 60.9% K-rate in '22 was his one hit -- a home run!

This is a good sign for fans convinced this offseason would see the end of Bloom's dumpster diving. We be bolstered.

They valued WONG more than Plawecki. Keeping a 3rd catcher on the roster served no purpose down the stretch. They needed to give Wong additional reps with the pitching staff, but also needed filler like Almonte to hold a glove and stand in the OF.

... for my posts -- or others that keep typing about this offseason that will define Chaim?

Can we really trust a guy with silent letters in 40% of his name?

There has been rumors of seeing Bloom driving a sanitation truck in other cities around MLB.

I don't think they are going to trade anything substantial for a backup catcher.

How about a #1 catcher? All they have is backups now.

I doubt they get a FT catcher, either. I think they roll the dice with McGuire & Wong with RHern in AAA as uninspiring depth.

'

With the high priority placed on the farm and a likely limited winter spending budget, I see other much greater needs than Catcher, 1B and maybe even DH.

We’re talking about Tom Murphy, not Sean Murphy. Tom Murphy is a backup catcher whose no better than anything the Sox have now.

Reese McGuire’s defensive metrics make him a much better option to be a starter than Tom Murphy…

Speaking of catchers, final CERA numbers for 2022:

Wong 3.72 (138.0 IP)

Vaz 4.21 (643.1)

Plawecki 4.32 (420.2)

McGuire 6.33 (229.0)

I’m not talking about anybody named Murphy. I’m saying all we have are backup catchers now, and need a #1.

Sox fans also have a weird definition of “dumpster diving.” Apparently it applies to any player not an All Star in his prime.

Schreiber and Springs were dumpster dives. And, as it turns out, good ones. Diekman and Strahm were legitimate MLB pitchers the Sox acquired by signing them to market-rate contracts. That’s not “dumpster diving” in my book…
