Hey, we get 2 comp picks!

Hip, HIP, HURRAY!!!

If the Red Sox had got under the luxury tax at the deadline, they would have received picks 70 & 71 in the 2023 Draft for Bogaerts & Eovaldi. Instead they will receive picks 133 & 134. They also miss out on ~$1 million in additional bonus pool money going off 2022 slot values.

It’s one of the dumbest things they’ve done in years. Plus, the could have gone over this winter, although that seems unlikely.

It just makes no sense. It doesn't sound like they had any plans of bringing back Eovaldi or JD and clearly weren't making competitive offers to Xander, so why hold them for a 1/2 season with no shot of making playoffs? Just dumb.

I had a theory that was shot down.

Crybaby fans.

You act so surprised, and didn’t see it coming that Bloom could do such a thing. Me I’m not surprised Bloom did this at all. Just another example of Bloom being in over his head.

If Bloom, and JH listened to the Crybaby fans Mookie, Bogey, and Raffy would have been all locked up by the Sox. My theory is just Bloom being Bloom, and once again not a good thing.

At the time they weren’t that far out of the third wild card. But they didn’t know Eovaldi would only make two more starts all year and that Devers would be in an injury-induced funk at the plate for the bulk of August…

Not locking up Mookie was on Dombrowski, who had 4 years to get a deal done…

Yes, Mookie, Bogey, Devers and nobody else. Don't forget Price at full price.

The budget magically is approved to get larger. The farm magically starts producing 3 Houcks a year. Glad you finally gave your plan. A real winner.

Could have offered Bogey $25M x 8 with no opt out, either, and most would be in prime.

We had no chance for a ring.

If we got in we did. Maybe not a good chance, but absolutely had one. The Phillies were the last team eliminated, but they only won 9 more games than the Sox and were the last team into the NL playoffs…

He certainly could have, and had that left no room in the budget for Sale, it would have accomplished two good things.

But considering a Bogaerts had one season left until free agency , it’s really shocking he signed anything at all..

I'm not a crapshoot playoff guy.

Hey, we may have made the playoffs had we traded JD, and everything else went right, correct?

The Crapshoot Factor has been MASSIVE the last 2 postseasons.

The 2022 Phillies winning the pennant with a Pythagorean 87 wins instead of the Dodgers with a Pythagorean 116 wins was one of the all-time crapshoot results.

You're a Crapshoot Denier.

A five year plan might be acceptable for a team that's tanking like the Cubs or the Astros did. Or a small market team like Miami. But not for a team with such a high payroll every year.

The five year plan should have started in 2020.

Posted
The 3 year plan becomes a 5 year plan, and if that team stinks it will be a 10 year plan.

This is Blooms year, and I have to say at the very least I’m interested to see how this blows up in his face yet I’m leaving the door open to be surprised in 2023. This year will make it break Bloom.

Ownership keeps on saying their intent is trying to compete for the playoffs. It just hangs Bloom out to dry if the intent is really something else. Maybe internally, he has their full support and he is strong enough to deal with the target on his back?

A big market team like the Boston Red Sox should NEVER have to have anything close to a five year plan, and should be a winning competitive team every year. This is total failure from JH on down.

Bloom knew, or should have known what he was getting into in coming to Boston, and if he didn’t he deserves to be hung out to dry, but he’s not alone.

Remaining Unsigned Free Agents at positions we need or could upgrade:

Starting Pitchers

Johnny Cueto (37)

Corey Kluber (37)

Michael Wacha (31)

Shortstops

Elvis Andrus (34)

Jose Iglesias (33)

Second Basemen

Yu Chang (27)

Cesar Hernandez (33)

Jean Segura (33)

Center Fielders

There is nobody listed that makes sense to move Kiké for.

As a backup:

Pollock

Pillar

Catchers

Steamer projects a higher fWAR than any guy listed here. YUCK!

I edited out the undesirables.

I'm not saying there should or shouldn't be a five year plan, BUT if there was a plan I hope it started back then.

A lot of posters on here still thought they had a chance for some reason. If they had traded JD in the offseason or didn't pick up JBJ, it never would have been up for discussion.

Even if Eovaldi makes all his remaining starts and Devers hits like he did pre-ASB, the team misses the postseason.
