Sounds like Communism!!

They're already doing revenue sharing now, only between the billionaire owners and not the labor.

Posted
Actually to be fair a percentage of revenues that are pulled from teams into a pool does goes to player benefits.

Then why are the player's benefits also counted in the luxury tax calculation...

I don’t know…but it just is.

To the Mets of course.

And every dollar they spend now is actually two dollars.

And Steve Cohen don't care. He's like a guy who's already committed so many crimes that one more doesn't matter.

Between the Mets, Rangers and Padres, who has any chance at finding a decent deal for a great player?

It's good for baseball that he's doing it.

Maybe. But it could lead to a hard cap, too.

Zero chance. If the owners try that, MLB would lose a season of baseball 5 years from now.

I'm not so certain about that. Look at the trend over the last 20 years of CBA's. I think a hard cap is coming, or at the very least much much harsher penalties.

The penalties are pretty harsh as they are. But Cohen has decided to thumb his nose at them and buy a championship even if it costs half a billion or more. It could be a problem.

The penalties are so much harsher for multiple time offenders, which is why teams are positioning themselves to spend huge and reset every several years....just to spend big again. The Mets, will actually be in a position to reset next year, and it's looking like the LAD are going to reset this year. So I that shows us that the penalties are somewhat working but also that big market teams are finding ways to still flex their muscles. I'm certain it will lead to only harsher penalties. There are more small market teams than large ones.

The Mets can't possibly re-set next year, unless we're talking 1998 Marlins tear-down.

Their projected 2024 tax payroll is $245 million already, without doing a thing.

No they can not. My information is old. I'm going to lose a bet on this one. They won't be able to reset until 2025, unless they start selling off contracts.

Even LAD resets, it looks like the Mets are going to be the first team we see to live above the luxury tax line for an extended period of time. It's going to be interesting to see how that plays out over the next ten years.

That number has to shatter the past record for next year's budgets.

Astounding!

Honestly, if the Mets win it probably only increases the harsher penalties soon to come in 2025. But hey, a WS is worth a lot.

To me, without a hard cap, which I don't think we see in 5 years, they need to make the teams busting over the line and staying there pay an absurd tax, give it the bottom teams, but force them to spend it on players by putting a floor on the low end and making that floor go up by $10M a year.

The teams on the bottom have the money to spend but THEY CHOOSE NOT TO. The Mets are just thumbing their nose at the other owners who are draining their fans dry without putting it back into the team. Don't root for their checkbooks!

Hypothetical question:

Is this acceptable if they are actively trying to extend Devers? I mean, if the come out in mid-January and announce an extension for X years at Y dollars, does it help some of this inactivity make sense?

I would be ok with that personally…

I'm down with that, but my faith is shattered so I'm not really expecting it.

Based on recent history they are just not going to meet Raffy's price, which means the correct move is to trade him.

No, because they should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. I also can't imagine that all their effort is going towards one player right now in constant negotiations. They've NEVER shown that initiative before. Have Bloom and JH deal with the Raffy negotiations and BOH figure out the remaining holes.

I know. I'm for forcing them to spend not rooting for them to save.

The pessimism is beyond justified. I do hope the Cookie Puss Meeting yielded positive headway, but the only way to salvage this situation is a conclusion…

I don’t even care how much they spend. If they can build a competitive team for $95 mill, I’m on board. You want to hunt for bargains, I’m fine with that. As long as you actually buy one!

I’m kind of glad the Mets are spending like this. All of these MLB owners are filthy rich and can afford to spend on talent, and they make a profit every season. Some of them just choose not too, and use the small market argument while putting together sack of s*** team every season, like the Pirates.
