He did. But it’s still a recipe for disaster.

Either way Hill earned 4 runs in 4 IPs.

This team needs that the season ends already.

Schreiber better than most in the Sox BP but he's no shutdown expert. It has been evident over his last few appearances that he has trouble drumming strikes when he needs some

This has to be the worst Sox bullpen ever. Schreiber and Whitlock have been the two best, but Whitlock tried to give the away the game last night and Schreiber has done his level best to ensure both runners he inherited scored. Plus he needed 22 pitches, of which 9 were strikes.

Not sure what Hill is complaining about. He created this disaster.

Cora lost the locker-room weeks ago.

Have they been overused?

Schreiber has the highest WAR in the bullpen at 2.0 and the best ERA, 2.22. But in August his ERA was 3.95.

Here’s who I would keep in the pen next year:

Schreiber

Whitlock

Houck

That’s it. For SP:

Wacha

Sale (with fingers crossed)

I don't think so. But Schreiber has already pitched more innings than in the rest of his career. Last year Whitlock pitched 73 innings, and he's there now despite time on the IL.

Ort knows that he has to pitch like surgeon, his days in the big leagues are counted.

He can breath one more day at least after this inning.

Way too early, plus keeping just 5 means going out and getting 8 new arms. That's daunting.

Big questions, can Taylor get over his back issues and be effective? Actually same question for Houck who is not ok. Barnes is under a relatively big contract, so he will be there ( not a tradable asset) .

Pivetta is still under control (via arb), i believe, so he will be there. Paxton poses a really hard choice. If the Sox opt him in, it is significant money. They should try a renegotiate with lots of performance based upside potential

Who else do you think is worth keeping?

The team needs to be dismantled. It’s going to take years for us to be relevant again.

Right

I forgot Pivetta

He is a serviceable #4-5 SP

Pivetta is fine for a #5, maybe even 4.

Taylor was pretty good. I'm not sure he can come back.

Keep Barnes to see if he can bounce back.

Bello, Crawford and German should get a look. Mata, too.

Rhetorically, how does this team have a losing record (31-34) at Fenway ? One possibility is too many LH hitters who don't work on going to left or even just left side vs the overshift. Then again, many of the Rede Sox all-timers ( Williams, Yaz, Ortiz, Boggs, Ruth) were LH hitters. Must be an eye test thing

Cheap shot. None of us know about the locker room. Plus who the heck cares? Games are not won in the freaking locker room. I have seen no lack of effort by anyone, including Hill.

The Sox team ERA is 14th out of 15 AL teams. That's the problem. Plus the hitting cooled off in August--especially Raffy and JDM, but Bogey also struggled.

I was referring to pitchers other than rookies. The rookies haven’t really had a reasonable chance to be evaluated.

It’s the job of the manager to get his team mentally ready for the game. It’s clear that this team hasn’t been focused for months. Yes, some of it is on the players too, but there has been too much brain dead baseball played for months.

Odd how game situations can shift over next to nothing happening. Hill had 2 outs on 6 pitches, when Lowe worked him to a 3-2 walk after several fouls, and then Garcia takes him to 22 pitches before a 3-2 called third strike. Nothing much happened but Hill spent a lot of energy on the last out. May eventually affect the BP inning needs.

Kind of saw that Rich Hill wasn't as sharp as last time out and thought this would become the bullpen burner that plagues this team. Maybe that's why we are under .500, overall and at Fenway. Or is it because Chaim "Cheapo" Bloom wouldn't hire a closer ? ( sarcasm)

Strahm has looked pretty good, but like Wacha, he's a FA after this year.

I'll ask again, do these relievers who cannot throw a strike know that in their bullpen warmup or does it come as a surprise to them?

Kelly has no clue.

Posted
29 pitches and 2 runs allowed on weak hits, but I didn't see anything Kelly threw that would indicate an ability to fool batters

Hill's attitude is a reflection of the locker-room. The locker room is an intangible asset in a team. Ask Bobby Valentine. Great locker rooms win WS and at times with not necessary very talented teams. The Sox have arguably a couple of examples.

Also, this team plays brain dead baseball in a regular basis. That's on Cora. It's unacceptable.

And yeah, the BP is atrocious. That's on Bloom.

It won't be easy, but with the expected winter spending budget Bloom will be handed, I'm not sure it needs to take years to get relevant. Were we relevant, last year?

Is this a doable winter plan?
