Yanks are flat. They sit Lemahieu. They will get Stanton back shortly. Boone keeps running Torres out there even though he has been hot garbage. He allows Locastro and Higgy to hit in the 8th. He is almost on auto pilot right now. I get having a big lead and being willing to use it, but cmon now. You gotta prioritize winning and a matchup with houston without home field will be a problem

The 'machine' broke down in KC today, but nothing some routine maintenance can't fix.

1st loss in 12 games ?? Yeah, that's a slump out here. And the sun is still up. Try that back east.

We have really missed that guy this past month,

Is he Q.O. Material?

A couple more games like this, and it's a lock.

Too bad Bloom gave Diekman the 2 year deal, not Wacha.

BTW, has anyone figured out how Bloom actually got something decent in return for DFAiekman?

3 good for the most part well played games against the Yankees, and not 4-5 hrs either. Well pitched, but now the offense has to pick it up.

The game ended and I found myself with 2 hours to kill…

WOW! I can’t believe it, but on game 116 Cora actually brought in Whitlock in the 9th for a three out save. Way to go Alex.

Whitlock has the repertoire to go more than 1 inning and is on a team whose rotation has been decimated by injuries and whose bullpen has been less than reliable. So it absolutely made/makes sense for Whitlock to go 2 or 3 innings in relief when it made/makes sense.

Are you unaware that the Sox team ERA of 4.35 is ranked 14th of 15 AL teams?

Season to date, Houck has 8 saves in 9 opportunities, Schreiber 4/6, and Whitlock 4/5. Plus a bunch of other guys who bombed.

Oh, and last night with a 3-0 lead in the 8th Cora brought in Brasier with his 5.20 ERA and -0.4 WAR, which is how Whitlock avoided going 2 innings.

Max, don’t worry, and be happy with a Red Sox win over the Yankees no less. I’ll go with Eck’s opinion though, but thanks. Go Sox!

Quick fact to show the irrelevance of W-L stats for pitchers, there are 8 Sox pitchers with winning records plus 3 more who are at .500 . All this on a team that is still 2 under .500. Further stretching the point of irrelevance is that Wacha is 7-1 , and long gone Diekman is 5-1, creating a +10 differential. So after you list the winning records and the .500 threesome, the rest of the guys are a combined -12, including Sale at 0-1. Who have the biggest negative W-Ls: Barnes and Bello at 0-3 each.

A total of 27 guys have taken the mound this year, including Bradley, Sanchez and Plawecki. The other 24 took the 5th amendment when asked if they had now or ever been an MLB qualified pitcher.

W-L records for relievers have pretty much always been irrelevant.

And W-L records for starters are becoming less relevant all the time, with the reductions in starter innings.

Even wins and losses in games started can be deceiving, but here's a look:

10-4 Wacha

5-4 Whitlock

6-5 Wink

9-9 Eovaldi

2-2 Houck

11-12 Pivetta

4-5 Crawford

1-2 Davis

0-2 Sale

0-3 Davis

I love Eck's passion for the game on the air and his HOF credentials, but Whitlock has too good a repertoire to be used sparingly--as closers usually are--on a team whose ERA is 14th of 15 AL teams. When Eck was a closer, he did it for the A's when they had a superb rotation.

Last year in the postseason the Sox basically had no closer--they had no saves--and it absolutely made no difference. The only blown save was in the 6th inning of game 1 of the ALCS when Sale started and lasted just 2.2 innings.
