Indeed.

The Yanks deserve all the props they get. That was one hell of a half season, despite their pitching going into a slump after jacko jinxed them. (lol)

All that matters is getting into the playoffs and being healthy.

Once the playoffs start, everybody is zero and zero. It becomes all about which teams execute the best for 9 innings.

Some playoff teams get byes, so there is that.

Exactly.

If the Sox get into the playoffs (of which I am extremely confident), I like their chances as much as I like any other team's chances.

Even teams with first round byes?

Well obviously they get a free pass through the first round. But once into the second round, I don't think they have any better a chance than the teams that had to play the first round.

True, but before the playoffs start, they clearly have a better chance than the teams that have to survive the first round.

There's no data on it yet, but that would be something that I'd be interested in looking at several years down the road. I get what you're saying, but I'm not sure that I agree with that statement on the whole. In other words, I think one of the wildcard teams is just as likely to win the WS as one of the division winners are.

That defies the laws of probability.

Under the previous system, the two Wild Card teams in each league had only 50% as good a pure statistical chance as the division winners.

Now saying that the eventual champ is just as likely to be a Wild Card team as a division winner is a whole other story.

The thing is, there are more Wild Card teams.

Yea, and each extra series or "play-in" game you have to play, lessens your chances to win it all.

If the playoffs are a coin flip, like some think it is, the teams that have to get through the WC round have just a 50% chance of getting to the round of 4 that teams with byes reach without having to play a 3 game series to get there.

Surely, the 2 teams in each league that get b yes have a better chance winning it all than those who don't, even if all series are 50-50.

So what you're saying is that since there are MORE Wild Card teams, that there is a better chance that the WS winner will be a Wild Card team and that if the best Wild Card team is the Boston Red Sox that they better get the duck boats ready?

I removed the last two lines of my post, but too late.

Bottom line is, the more rounds you have to play, the worse your chances are.

I liked the last two lines, personally. I was just being silly.

There is no more play in game, correct? The first round is best of three. Division Series is best of five. ALCS is best of 7. Therefore, WS should be best of 9.

The first round best of 3 is all played at the Home Team, so it’s best to be a Div winner, or the top wildcard.

I think the two Div winners with the best records get byes and the other goes into the Wild Card round.

Yes, OR is just saying there's a benefit to being a division winner (3rd best) or the best WC as you get home field advantage in the WC round.

Make the regular season 150 games.

I agree. 150 or 152. If the playoffs go to 8 teams, it is even more important to lessen the season length.

Makes sense but not dollars.

So not happening.

Agreed. Those 10-12 games x 30 teams is worth more than they make with an extra round of playoffs, even if you make the first round 5 or 7 games.

So can we drop the discussion about shortening the regular season forever now? ;)

How about we make the season 12 games shorter but make each game one inning longer?

Expand the roster to 30 and 50 and have no days off with doubleheaders every Sunday. Edited by moonslav59

I love the long season. Nothing better after a long day to grab a beverage and watch baseball. Don't shorten the season!

It's a real Sophie's Choice everyone.

Reduce the season to 150 games and make me happy.

Keep the season at 162 games and make jacko happy.

And the winner is "keep the season at 162 games because the owners refuse to lose any revenue".
