But you can't find guys who can hit 40+ homers who are also good in the clubhouse and help other hitters by teaching them the strike zone. They don't grow on trees. The Sox could still have Schwarber to DH for 3 more years. They could have ate some of JD's money and sacrificed some defense for one year. Schwarber wouldn't have been worse than Franchy at first base.

I think Wacha, Hill and Strahm were pretty close to what Schwarber's value, and they cost $5M less.

If Yoshida works out, I'm not going to cry over a FA choosing another team. Bloom did not DFA him. He had 8 slots to fill and $60M. He chose 2B not LF/1B/DH to spend the most on.

I really likes Schwarber and was happy Bloom traded scraps for him. Had we not had JD, I'd have been more upset we didn't try to outbid DD for his services. Right now, it doesn't bother me at all.

Xander Bogaerts wanted to re-sign with the Red Sox. But they made it impossible.

The Red Sox’ final reported offer to Bogaerts was a six-year deal worth roughly $160 million — well short of the Padres’ 11-year, $280 million deal.

Per WEEI. Ownership wouldn't spend the money. Depending on who else they spend it on and Marcelo Mayer, we will see how smart that was. I don't think Xander is going to be elite during the last 6 years of the deal. Padres will probably regret the deal but it certainly hurts the Sox in the short term and it hurts the brand. The Sox need to go back to being big spenders if they want to keep the fans engaged. I saw a lot of fans disguised as empty seats at Fenway all year.

Before the FA market prices soured, I thought $160/6 was pretty fair.

I hate to see him go. We could have offered him that, long ago, and he'd be here, but we didn't. I don't think the Sox felt he was worth a penny more. Yes, that made it "impossible."

John Henry is Paul Winchell. Chaim Bloom is Knucklehead Smiff. Winchell has total control of everything Knucklehead says and does. So, don't blame Knucklehead . He is just a dummy.

A Dummy BOTCHER at that.

A Dummy BOTCHER at that.

He is pulling off what top brass wants with precision. He's not botching their plan, he's fulfilling it, expertly.

Maybe we should have hopes he botched their plan and accidently signing Bogey, while they weren't paying attention.

They had better hope the $100M Man From Japan works out, or they’ll look even worse.

I think JH needs to make another appearance on the F&M show, and explain how Bogey who the Red Sox wanted back so bad that they only offered a one yr extension last off season. I don’t want to see anymore of the Kennedy, and Bloom comedy act anymore.

I thought this was supposed to be the off season that defines Blooms " legacy ." Looks like folks are backing off that already. Are we giving up on Correa ? Are we giving up on the division for 2023?

They are lining up the excuses for him and deflecting blame to Henry. If they are fighting for last place at the All Star break again, Henry will not fire himself.

Yes. It’s already over.

Cancel the games! Forget the season!! Let NESN show reruns of “The Andy Griffith Show” and old Match Games from the ‘70s.

No point in playing baseball this year…

I think Blooms legacy was formed in the nerd room at Tampa with all his analytics sheets, which is where he should have stayed, and not out front as the main man trying to wheel, and deal.

It's $90M.

Zips projects .305 20 76

Just 62 Ks

So, you think JH wanted Bogey signed, and Bloom refused. Got it.

It's not an excuse. It is what it is.

If you think Bloom talked JH into not signing Bogey, fine, but I'm wondering why anyone might think that.

BTW, this is Bloom's legacy winter. He had $90M to spend, and he's got $40M left.

Predictions are garbage. Anything can happen. Makes me laugh when I see these.

Did they Predict Judge to hit 62 HR last year?

They almost always under guess, so that may be encouraging, but it's hard enough to predict players with MLB track records. This is pretty much a shot in the dark.

Predictions are garbage. How did all the Red Sox batting predictions come out this past year? Worthless piece of technology, or anything else

Fans who don't understand projections should probably ignore them.

I didn’t say that about Bogey, but I can guarantee that JH wants Bloom to get the Red Sox out of last place.

Honestly who knows who makes the decisions. When DD was here it certainly didn't seem like JH was giving him a budget. It seemed he was doing what he wanted to. I'm sure JH has a say as he own the team but that's why you hire a GM for. I'm sure if Bloom believes in something he can persuay JH to go for it

So much lovin' oozing out of all your posts on Bloom.

DD did stay under the budget in 2017, right after going over for 2 years. It sure looked like the 2019 budget was gearing towards a 2020 reset. I doubt DD wanted to let Kimbrel and Kelly go without replacing them.

Since they usually under project totals, they did pretty good on the Sox.

If JH did not allow Bloom to extend Bogey, how is that "excuse" making? How is it Bloom's fault Bogey is gone?

Yes, he wants Bloom to get us out of last place, and he better do it, this winter. If he is given the $40M remining under the tax line, it's my expectation, too.

That's not really true. If there was no budget we'd still have Betts. Plus if you recall we were all surprised DD didn't spend anything on the pen for 2019 after the departure of Kimbrel and Kelly.

Posted
It's $90M + a $15M fee that doesn't count for tax purposes, so $105M in real money.

Good point.

I stand corrected, actually I'm sitting.

That’s why I said the $100M man that the Red Sox paid more for than what they offered Bogey last offseason.

DD was never known to build BP though

Yes, you were correct. A lot has changed since last year, but $90M x 4 was a low ball then, and looks horrific, now. Even $160/6 is being lambasted.

He did get Kimbrel and some that did not work out well, namely Carson Smith and Tyler Thornburg.
