The Earth isn't flat, it's hollow.

And it’s actually shaped like a burrito.

It’s also filled with Dave’s Insanity Sauce

Do you really think Barnes won’t clear waivers?

I never said that, but these days, I'd say 50-50. I would not be upset, if we waived him and someone claimed him, but as of right now, and it changed from day-to-day, he's not #1 on the 26 or 40 man roster doghouse list.

How can it be hollow and filled with the crappy Insanity Sauce at the same time?

Just trying to explain those pesky volcanic eruptions…

Fair question.

I have defended the right of players to not get surgery, although I have also questioned those decisions, too. (Example - Sale waiting until March for TJ.). Just like I did with Houck.

The one thing I did that wasn’t fair was I assumed why Houck was vaccinated. And there are other potential reasons. For example, I didn’t consider he might be allergic to the vaccine.

The only thing I know for certain is the reason wasn’t a fear of needles…

Meh. If there were a sensible reason like allergic to the vaccine, Houck would have said so. His refusal to say why actually tells us a lot.

In the case of COVID, there are people who are immuno-compromised and must be cautious about that vaccination, but the point there is that competent doctors can tell patients whether or not getting vaccinated is risky for them.

One more time, the science behind vaccines is overwhelmingly in favor of them--not just covid, but measles, smallpox, polio, mumps, whooping cough, etc. Even flu shots are strongly recommended despite the fact that the formula for that year/season doesn't always hit the mark.

Vaccinations have saved many, many millions of lives--not just those vaccinated, but whoever they come in contact with.

When they had no flu vaccine during the great flu epidemic of 1918, one technique the US Army pounced on was segregating those with the flu from those who didn't have it. Social distancing over 100 years ago. This time around we added masks--wild applause--and then even better masks (KN95) which help protect the wearer.

However, as most on talksox will admit, there were still plenty of Americans who refused to wear masks or distance themselves when COVID was at its peak. This was their sacred right as individuals--or so they seemed to think--and they could care less about spreading the COVID virus. To me refusing to get vaccinated comes very close to that attitude.

Does anyone on talksox remember the ebola virus? It was a big deal, big enough to cause the USA to send field hospitals, etc to help contain it at its source, Africa. There was no vaccine for it, so treatment and segregation where the only remedies. It was also very contagious and thus a threat to the rest of the planet.

COVID isn't anywhere near as lethal as ebola, but it sure can spread quickly, as we have learned to our regret. And it can kill.

There are several possible reasons:

1) He's one of those people who don't want to be told what to do.

2) He's received too much misinformation.

3) He has genuine concerns about the effects of the vaccine and as a young, healthy athlete, he feels he's in a low risk group.

Whatever it is, it has to be pretty strong for him to give up $45,000 and to endure all this scrutiny.

Agree with all. Well put. That last sentence is something I've seen, but this is the first time it's registered.

It is a stupid rule by the stupid government of Canada. Period.

Maybe they're pissed at us for not selling them vaccines when we had lots and they had very little. That did happen.

Or maybe 4) he doesn’t want to face Vlad Jr. and Boba Fett. I mean Bo Bichette…

But you agree on the burrito, right?

I think it's more like if you took a chalupa and tried to have the ends touch one another.

So more like one of those twisty French donut-thingies? Sorry for my overly technical nomenclature…

I was like, what the hell is this idiot talking about now and googled "french donut." You're thinking of what Dunkin Donuts once called a French Cruller, but now has retired due to supply chain issues. Did you know that they aren't really French? They are Dutch! Also, if you are in New England, just go to Honey Dew and get their Cruller instead.

Does the hollow earth look like a donut? IDK. It's probably more like one of those big plastic baseballs for toddlers if you drilled a hole through it. I think. Maybe.

It's so cool how we can all have our own personal science, now.

Of course that's the issue. But in Houck's case, he is taking a hit in the wallet and with some portion of the fan base.

IMO, the team is taking a much bigger hit than the fans or Houck's wallet.

Probably. Right now Houck is a one inning guy and only then in the 9th with a Sox lead of 3 or fewer runs. He started against the Jays back in April, and went 5 innings, giving up 2 runs. But he's out of that business now.

Sale of course is not vaxed either.

Nor is Duran, and it sounds like Kike won't be ready by then.

I am really not liking the tweets by the media types who are knocking Duran for 'turning his back on his team' and 'not taking advantage of this opportunity' when his career is so young. This decision has to be killing Duran. I'm sure he wants nothing more than to be able to play in Toronto. IMO, the media and the fans need to lay off.

Agreed. It takes courage to refuse to be coerced and bullied into doing something that you have serious reservations about. There are many examples of athletes missing games for various personal reasons. I hope these guys have the support of Cora , their teammates and Sox management.

I respect any person's right to make choices like this and others, too, but if I think their choice is hurting the team, I think it is fair to express those concerns and opinions on sites like this. Edited by moonslav59

That's all it should be about here. It's not like before vaccines were available, when a president of one country ordered workers back into the close quarters of meat processing plants while a deadly, contagious virus was raging. That could be considered political to some.

These are unprecedented times. Someone mentioned Sandy Koufax refusing to pitch on the Sabbath for religious beliefs. That was almost 60 years ago, and he only missed one day -- not an entire series or multiple series. Fans were still ok with Koufax in that World Series, since he still went out and won a ring and the MVP.

At least Sox fans have to like Bloom deflecting responsibility away from his players. He noted it was his job to ensure they always had enough depth to overcome any missed games by guys on the roster. It's a tall task, though, to instantly replace the production of both a new closer and leadoff batter.

If anyone deserves a break by the fans in this situation, it's Chaim Bloom...

Are you counting being pushed back one day as a miss?
