Red Sox trade Hunter Renfroe in trade involving Jackie Bradley Jr

I said at the time of the Mookie trade that Bloom should have gotten some pitching in return, and as time goes along he looks like he got less, and less in return, and no pitching.

It's easy to say, but the Dodgers were only getting one year of Mookie and had to pay him $27 million, so they weren't really in a position of having to give up a pile of goodies.

I think it was already agreed that Mookie would be resigning, but I think you’re right that the Sox weren’t in a good position of getting back any prize prospects.

There was no doubt in my mind that the Dodgers would re-sign Mookie. The idea that the Sox could trade him and then re-sign him was strictly a pipe dream.

Mookie wanted out of Boston, and the Red Sox waited one year to late to trade him. Resigning in Boston was a pipe dream.

They did try to get pitching. Things didn’t work out, although I lliked Graterol.

The notion that he got less as time goes on is kind of silly. Verdugo has been getting better. And really, Downs had this horrible development path he’s trying to adjust to, but he’s only 23 and in AAA.

Wong never struck anyone as an MLB starter…

You can hang on to Jeter all you want, but at this point I’m in the opinion that he’ll be pretty much a bust if he isn’t already. Time will tell.

And it was the Sox' medical opinion that Graterol wasn't going to have a long career.

And I thought you didn’t care about prospects…. ;)

Not until they produce in a Red Sox uniform, or gets traded for someone who does, but that doesn’t take away from Bloom trading for someone who would work out.

The Dodgers didn’t come to the same conclusion though.

Yup, and we'll see if the Sox' crack medical staff came to the right conclusion.

Has he been on the IL much, already?

If yes, was it for the condition the Sox were concerned about?

I thought the Red Sox originally believed Graterol could be a starter, but the medicals convinced them otherwise.

Tomase wrote this (for what it's worth):

So why isn't he in pitching-starved Boston? The Red Sox didn't like his medicals. Graterol underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in 2016 and sat out the next 15 months. A shoulder impingement sidelined him for two months last year, and when the Red Sox got a look at his imaging, they decided he'd be physically limited to a relief role, decreasing the value of the prospective starter they thought they were acquiring.

So we took a third string catcher instead.

Sold high on Renfroe. He was not going to repeat what he did last year. JBJ is better defender and is holding RF until they can upgrade. Whether that is Duran or someone who is not even on the roster now. The two prospects are interesting!

I have to go back on this post. You do realize Renfroe has had seasons like he did last year before right? Who's to say he won't repeat it? He's had prior seasons of 33HR, 26, 26 and last year 31. His career OPS is close to 800. He's no slouch with the bat

When the best Red Sox Centerfielders are discussed, IMO, Reggie Smith doesn’t get his due. Here is a reminder of the talent that he had.

He was a great one- no doubt.

I was very surprised when the sox opted for jbj part deux....

The only relevant question, now, is did you scratch your head?

Those of us who supported the trade had hopes JBJ could turn it around a bit. At the moment such hopes look dim, especially since our overall hitting approach looks so bad.

At this point I think it's safe to say that he is who he is, the sample size is big enough.

His 2022 OPS is 266 points below his career OPS. But age and bat speed might be factors now.

I was referring to his career, he's always been a very streaky hitter with a huge hole in his swing.
