Red Sox trade Hunter Renfroe in trade involving Jackie Bradley Jr

Renfroe was s*** last year too early on. Way too soon to be talking about this trade paying off. Wait till Bradley goes into one of his long funks where his batting avg dips below 200.

Others here will say that is true, but defense never goes into slumps!

Yep, it's a long season.

So the trade is a bust if Bradley goes into a slump?

Bradley is the better overall player of the two. One bad season in 2021 doesn’te that….

Not to be a broken record, but it's the k and bb rates that tell me how JBJ is playing.

Career: 25.8% k, 9.0% bb

2021: 30.8% k, 6.5% bb (worse k and bb rates of his career)

2022: 19.2% k, 11.5% bb (best k and bb rates of his career SSS)

The hits really aren't falling in but his Soft/Med/Hard contact rate is 0/72/28. He's making decent contact. The hits will come.

Sold high on Renfroe. He was not going to repeat what he did last year. JBJ is better defender and is holding RF until they can upgrade. Whether that is Duran or someone who is not even on the roster now. The two prospects are interesting!

5th best on the team!

Bold prediction -he won’t finish there.

But I still think this was a smart trade for multiple reasons…

Duran will never play RF in Fenway.

Binelas & Hamilton may crack the top 20, by mid season.

Binelas will be top 20 on May 1. I think Hamilton should leapfrog some of those guys ahead of him too. I think the reason they are further down is that they hadn't really been scouted by SoxProspects due to COVID and the crackdown on scouting this offseason (due to Rule 5 draft issues).

True. Some others around them are doing very well, too.

Right now, Binelas is 21st, so moving to 20 should not be hard. Hamilton is 26th.

Rafaela

Bonaci

Fitzy

Koss

Jimenez

Murphy

Seabold

They could pass Ward, McDonough and Paulino (Hamilton only).

I doubt Downs drops that much, but maybe he does. Crawford may drop.

Then, guys like Lugo, behind them, may continue doing well and move up a lot, too.

I wouldn't have Downs in my top 20. McDonough may be too high. I'd probably drop Crawford from the top 20 too.

Agreed, but soxprospects really protects Downs.

For now.

With his current K rate, he may just drop below 20 by mid season. (27 Ks in 60 ABs)

His .686 OPS is actually better than recent years, so maybe he can salvage his ranking.

They are very down on what he is doing in the batters box right now. They hate his new swing.

Good thing Verdugo has looked good.

I wish we just stuck with Graterol and Verdugo.

Graterol 2021: 0.3 fWAR

Wong 2021: 0.2 fWAR

Graterol is ok. He's not a gamechanger right now though.

No, but better than Downs.

Perhaps we could have gotten Verdugo, Graterol & Wong.

But is he better than Downs and Wong?

Probably just for the prospect. It's certainly not for JBJs bat

The two prospects are doing very well.

Plus...

2022 fWAR

0.1 JBJ

0.1 Renfroe

And I was one who scratched his head over this trade and got scalped for doing so.

The key word is prospects. Prospects who have never played an inning for the Red Sox, and may never will, and at the moment not much help at all for 2022.

Today, yes. Next year, who knows?

I said at the time of the Mookie trade that Bloom should have gotten some pitching in return, and as time goes along he looks like he got less, and less in return, and no pitching.
