Carlos Correa is the closest thing to a young Arod we may ever see without PED

Plus his antics when getting a big hit are very off putting…

I feel like those things are only called "antics" when it's the opposing team doing them.

Mookie's down year is 2021 now. 3.9 fWAR. 40 games missed. Slight negative ratings in baserunning and fielding, likely due to the assorted injuries.

Even Mookie could start tailing off. It's those nagging little injuries like he had in 2021 that could do it.

I was merely talking about at the time they signed mega deals.

But you also said he IS a great player and SHOULD have gotten the money.

I don't know if Bloom wants to give a megadeal to anyone. And who knows, maybe he's right. $325 million to Corey Seager is beyond absurd.

I'm just rambling now...

It's just lighting money on fire. Dude makes Ellsbury look like Gehrig.

I can't get over the Rangers spending $500 mill on Seager and Semien.

$500 mill = 2 David Price contracts plus a Nathan Eovaldi contract.

ARod's crazy Rangers contract was 10/252. Now those things are handed out like Pezz.

They will likely not even make the playoffs, unless they expand them to 7 teams,

True, but on the flip side, Sox fans are still beeching about Price's contract and the continued payroll impact.

Not the smart ones though.

Of course, ARod’s crazy contract was 21 years ago. So in 21 years, “crazy” went from $25mill per year to $32mill per year. But how much did the price of crazy go ip in the 21 years before ARod’s deal? What was considered a crazy contract in 1980?

Still too expensive, and what if he hits under .8oo like he has in 2 of his last 4 seasons.

I’d have rather spent on Betts.

I mean, the first of that 4 year stretch he was just 23 years old, and the second sub .800 was 2020. I'm not factoring 2020 into anything really. Correa is a stud, I would love to have him on this team in his prime (if possible, that's a whole debate), even if it's just for a few years.

It doesn’t matter that his first 4 years were better than his last?

I know Story will be cheaper, but those away splits are scary.

I’d have preferred Baez over Story.

Well at least we know he will be good at Fenway. Keep in mind he wasn't horrible away, he just wasn't that great. Without looking it up I think his OPS was .750 but his defense is great and much better than the other offensive-minded players at SS. Don't we want elite defense at SS????

Keep in mind Baez has a lifetime OPS about .30 points higher than Storys away splits. Baez is also a guy who led the league in strike outs. Now I know strikeouts are overestimated, but still we had a lot of that in our lineup and I don't think it needs anymore. His OBP is barely above .300

I suppose you could say the same thing about Story though, high strike outs but he does walk a little bit more and he seemed to cut down on the swing and miss in 2021. They're actually kind of similar, you'd think if you like one you would like to other.

Baez might have offered positional flexibility SS/2B. But with Bloom and Cora calling the shots I could see them doing the same thing with Bogaerts/Story.

I'm not sure you can translate Coors inflated numbers to Fenway.

Also, If you're a Sox hitter a lot of your away games are played in NY and Toronto which are also hitters parks and stats indicate have been more HR friendly than Coors in recent years.

.

The D is better than Bogey, but why pay a .752 OPS (away) guy what an .863 OPS SS should make?

BTW, it was .717 in 2021

It's all baked into* WAR, which is why WAR is about the only reliable measurement.

* don't especially care for the phrase, but have to use it sometimes LOL

Do you prefer soup or stew analogies?

Don't like most food analogies.

With exceptions of course. I'm a fan of the pie analogy.

What about "rolled into?" That can also be a decent weed analogy?

Does WAR adjust for park/thin air factors?

Posted
For park factors, which include thin air.

Okay, so Story played more than Baez, yet had a lower fWAR in 2021.

He finished 9th in PAs.

13th in the offense component of fWAR (bogey placed 6th).

4th in the defense component (Bogey placed 1th)

4th in base running.

12th in WAR (Baez 11th and Bogey 5th)

2020-2021:

8th in fWAR at 6.0 (Bogey 4th at 7.1)

2019-2021:

4th at 12.0 (Bogey 2nd at 13.9) It helped to be 3rd in SS PAs & innings at SS.

His +5.9 UZR/150 since 2019 places him 5th- just ahead of Baez.

He places 2nd in DRS behind Baez, who played 500 less innings at SS:

DRS (innings)

40 Baez (2420)

36 Correa (2420)

36 Story (2920)
