They must think they can unlock some hidden potential, otherwise I don't know how he is worth more than like $3M.

$8.5mill should translate to about $500K per IP…

Now, he’ll go on to be the next Pivetta.

Thanks!

Heaney is another one where the question was never really about talent. He just can't stay on the field...

I think his talent is in question, too.

His 4.33 FIP over the past 4 years would at least make him an average starter, maybe slightly below. But bear in mind he has probably tried to pitch injured, given how easily he seems to get hurt.

He's not a game changer, but he has some skills that unfortunately seem to hurt him physically...

But why?

Friedman got impatient.

Maybe he figured he needed to find a cheap replacement on the Injured List for Kershaw?

4.33 places him 39th out of 53 pitchers with 450+ IP since 2018.

He's 63 out of 100 with 350+ IP. I guess that's close to average. Also, close to bottom third tier.

Wanna hear a joke?

From MLB Trade Rumors:

Clubs project him as a sound bounce-back candidate with left-hander Robbie Ray serving as the model.

Don't you have to be good, at some point, to bounce back?

Oh, I get it.

That is the joke!

Heaney is projected to have a 1.9 fWAR in 2022.

His numbers do suggest he's not as much of a bum as he looked with the Yankees last year.

He's a roller coaster ride that I'm glad the Sox are not part of.

Flat and low rollercoasters are not fun.

The problem with Heaney's roller coaster is that you're bound to end up underwater.

From MLBTR:

"Among those with at least 250 innings over the last three seasons, Heaney’s 27.1 K% ranks 24th in the Majors. His K-BB% ranks 21st. The skills are there for a 4.00 ERA starter. Always a flyball pitcher, Heaney was undone in 2021 by allowing 18% of his flyballs to leave the yard. A team with a big ballpark might wind up with a bargain."

His expected ERA was 4.01. Not great, but also not as terrible as the actual 5.83 ERA. The deal might not be that appealing, but this is the kind of deal you can make to take a chance on somebody. If he ends up being serviceable, it's a pretty good deal. If he's a bust, it's not too difficult to eat a one year contract.

This reeks of Martin Perez type hopes but at $2.5M more.

Sure, he has some stats that look favorable, but this is a strange reach for a team like the Dodgers. He seems like a 6th starter type for them, and that's a lot of money for that role.
