I seldom correct other posters' 'improper grammar' or misspellings. In fact, I never correct them. This a baseball forum; not an introduction to proper English.

But thanks, I'll try to remember that in the future or not.

Wasn't meant to offend, or to put myself on a higher ground than others. I just remember a teacher telling me this once somewhere along the road, and thought I would share. More of a fun fact than anything else. No harm intended.

But, just because you don't correct other people's grammar doesn't mean that I, or anybody else, shouldn't either.

Don't you start...

It's actually been most of my fault. I like playing instigator. Life's more fun that way. Plus, it's helping me get through the last push of returns before our 10/15 deadline.

I feel like this thread is teetering on the brink of a cliff. Who wants a game thread?

This is what happens when there are 3 off-days between games.

Hello all - first-time poster, long-time lurker.

The Astros are going to be a tough nut to crack but I think, if a few cards fall our way, we've got a good shot at the WS. Definite underdogs, but I think this team is starting to embrace that role and will take a full head of steam into Houston. Really looking forward to Friday night!

Welcome.

Being underdogs can help lessen the pressure and also give the team the attitude that they have something to prove and someone to prove wrong.

Your teacher was wrong. Very seldom is perfectly correct. The very before seldom conveys emphasis and is perfectly acceptable. Here is a famous quote from Simeon Strunsky "Famous quotes are very seldom quoted correctly" Strunsky is best remembered as a prominent editorialist for the New York Times for more than two decades. If it is good enough for the editors of the New York Times, it is certainly good enough to use on this forum.

"Seldom" just means "infrequently." No one would ever argue with "very infrequently"...

Yes, I believe "very seldom" is fine. Words that you shouldn't use "very" before would be words that have an "absolute" meaning like "perfect" or "unique".

English is an evolving language. "It is me." was once considered improper until Winston Churchill used it. Normalcy was not a word until Harding used it. Gay had a totally different connotation a hundred years ago.

And yet people will use it in front of “pure”. I consider them Satanists.

Especially those P&G nutballs who decided their soap was 99 44/100 % pure. Pure means 100%!!! No wonder everyone used to think you were satanic. (Truth is, Proctor was satanic. Gamble just played along.)

And no one said “truthiness” before Stephen Colbert!

McCullers left the game early due to forearm tightness. The series will be seriously impacted if he cannot go

At this point, it’s a safe bet Houston has several contingency plans in the event Lance McCullers gets hurt. What throws them off their game is if he actually stays healthy…

Yeah well.. every team is battling injuries, none more than the Red Sox. If you can play through it, great. If not then don’t cripple the team by being out there if you know you shouldn’t be. These three days off could not come at a better time for the Boston Red Sox.

It might have been somebody in my family, not a teacher. I can't remember. There is a varying level of education among my extended family, and a varying level of ego that is inversely related. I guess I was wrong. Both "very seldom" and "seldom" are acceptable, according to some quick internet research.
