Say what you will; The J.D. Martinez signing was a whole lot better that the Giancarlo Stanton one.

Stanton is probably one of the most horrible contracts of all time.

OTOH JD's was a steal.

Cora says Schwarber will start his rehab assignment in Worcester tonight and Brasier will have his second rehab outing. Verdugo is on his way back but may not be available today.

@PeteAbe

Alex Verdugo's three-day paternity leave (under MLB rules) is over. He's on the restricted list now.

Cora says Schwarber will be with the Sox "sooner rather than later." Asked if he could need just one game in Worcester: "I'll keep it as sooner rather than later."

I'm thinking Sox could activate him for the weekend.

Well then let's f***ing go!

We could use him today.

Dombrowski did very well with the JD signing.

In related news schwarber pulled a hammy tonight while sneaking into cora’s office to steal a corona light.

He is expected to be out another 10 to 12 weeks!

Cora says Sox will still have Schwarber play the field. Team hopes to have him play OF this weekend and will continue to have him get work in preparation for 1B.

So, DH game 1 and RF game 2?

Since joining their new teams:

Anthony Rizzo: .217/.333/.413/.746, After the his first two games with the Yankees, it's even worse: .146/.229/.220/.449

Kyle Schwarber: .368/.538/.526/1.065

Yes, both batting lines are fueled by very low and very high BABIPs, respectively. And of course, we are talking very small samples. Regardless, maybe Schwarber is a better pick up, despite the fact that he hasn't played 1B yet, than most people are giving him credit for.

My issue with Schwarber was not having him for 2 weeks while the team was floundering.

Schwarber's bat was a fine pickup, but the defensive machinations to get him in the lineup have not worked well at all.

Until he can take over at 1b, it's a little bit of square peg in a round hole. Otherwise, his pickup up is kind of superfluous.

Fair points MVP and Bell.

All I can say is patience. His reward may not have been immediate, but hopefully will be worth the wait come September.

He's a great player. The fit is kind of weird. If they agreed on the option, I'd be 100% in on the move.

That sucked, but it was a new injury that forced a delay in return, so all the blame can't be placed on Bloom.

Maybe he'll pull a Steve Pearce with us.

Well said. Prescient, in fact.

A report in today's Globe says Schwarber will start at 1b vs. the Twins. And why not? The Sox don't need an outfielder nor a DH--at least, not nearly as much as a good bat at 1b. Plus Schwarber came up as a catcher.

The set back was a brand new injury?

Yes. I keep telling you that.

He was on the IL for a hammy and pulled a groin in rehab- maybe learning 1B.

The groin didn't seem to keep him out much longer than projected though.

A couple of days at most. He was going to be out at least 10 days regardless from what I remember. Maybe he missed an extra 3 games? Maybe? He also skipped any rehab games.

I never heard a definitive date for his return- just vague timelines.

I do know, he started to workout, then had to stop.

He may have only been set back 3-5 days, but I think it mostly affected his ability to play 1B, and maybe not getting a few more days off after his game one with us than what might have happened with no groin injury- a new injury.

Not being able to play 1B hurt, too. If force Dalbec into the line-up and JD into the OF.

As far as I remember, nobody said 10 days minimum.

This thread was started on August 8, 9 days after the deadline, so obviously it was going to be at least 10 days.
