It does call into question why the big move at the deadline was for a guy on the IL.

I think the answer is obvious:

1) He was all we could get for what Bloom was willing to part with.

2) His contract did not put us over the lux tax line.

3) He's a .910 hitter, this year.

You don't think you could have received Schoop or Aguilar for Aldo Ramirez?

If Schwarber doesn't come back to put up numbers bigger than these two guys, it's a failure on Bloom.

Be nice to simpletons. Don't compare them to He Who Must Not Be Named.

There's also that fancy option thing for 2022.

It's a mutual option, which are RARELY exercised. If Schwarber picks that up, it makes the trade worth it. If he doesn't pick that up AND his performance is worse than Schoop or Aguilar's down the stretch, it's a failure on Bloom.

That’s a fair question. Especially since both Schoop and Aguilar are healthy.

Now maybe the preference was for a left-handed hitter, as Dalbec still does have good splits vs LHP (.803 this year, .849 career). If so, both Aguilar and Schoop are right-handed. And Schwarber (.976) is significantly better vs RHP than either Schoop (.707) or Aguilar (.821) this year.

As n neither Schoop nor Aguilar were dealt, it’s impossible to know what an acceptable offer would have been. BTV does suggest that Ramirez (3.3) would be more than enough to get Schoop (1.7) and would have been a good match for Aguilar (2.8). But this doesn’t mean either GM likes him and would make a deal.

I did think Schoop was the best fit. Detroit has since extended him, but at the time he has 2 months left on his deal and his versatility would have been a good attribute amidst all the injuries and COVID cases. Aguilar would have been nice, too, but he isn’t a free agent until after 2022, so the impetus to deal him might not have been there just yet.

I see why the Sox got changed over these two, but until he actually suits up, it looks like a potential mistake. Perhaps the bigger mistake was getting the injured Schwarber and stopping there. There was really no reason the Sox couldn’t have acquired Schwarber and Schoop, especially since Schoop’s numbers this year vs LHP (1.017) dwarf Dalbec’s…

Seems like Detroit may have been in negotiations with Schoop on an extension and were confident it was going to happen.

Those guys seemed pretty cheap and reasonable to me. I wasn't expecting Trea Turner or Scherzer or Berrios. My expectations were low and they ended up getting 2 AAA pitchers and a guy on the IL.

Granted, the Sox are saying that Schwarber's set back isn't a big deal and that he should be back soon, but this team is 2-8 over the last 10 and fading even faster than that.

If the playoffs are truly a crapshoot, you go for it when have a legit shot to get in. They had that shot this year and it feels like they threw it away. Folding when you are in 1st place at the deadline is a weird choice.

I think IL Schwarber was acquired more with an eye on next year -- or whichever year Bloom deems worthy of actually going for it. Anything the Sox got from ILS this season would be an added bonus.

And if he doesn't agree to picking up the option? What then?

And if he's not going to contribute this year, why not pick up someone else for 1b?

They clearly want Schwarber at 1b since they've already worked him out there.

Bloom will flash big mahket money to change his mind. Remember, this the front office that bragged about resetting last year. And if you forgot, they'll tweet to remind you.

Who is available as a FA 1Bman?

I speak in facts and the facts are undisputed

Guys like KS are a dime a dozen. Bloom should have stood pat. When your organization cannot develop pitching WHY would u trade pitching for a glorified Sunday League Softball Player?

Agree on all as I did when you first said this.

However, I'm still pissed that the guy hasn't played a single game yet.

Also, even though I no doubt mistakenly think 1b is the easiest infield position, this season on this Sox team it appears to be twice as tough as SS, 3b, or 2b.

Dalbec, a trained thirdbaseman, has struggled at 1b. Arroyo injured himself playing there. And, for all we know, Schwarber's groin pull happened as a result of just practicing at 1b.

Gone are the days when a third baseman like Youk could move to 1b seamlessly and skillfully. Ditto Mike Napoli, a career catcher. Even Ted Williams late in his career could play 1b semi-adequately.

Schwarber is a legit lefty power bat. He will help if he ever gets here. He never struck me as the most well conditioned guy on the field, but John Kruk had a pretty nice career.

Can you see Schwaber stretching for a ball at 1st? Here's a guy coming off a hamstring injury and now a groin pull. I can offer to sell you the Brooklyn bridge if you are that gullible.

Is it any better seeing him in LF?

(Or, playing JD in LF and Scwarber at DH?)

I agree.

I don’t know if it when Bloom (should have) realized his prospect packages were never going to be enough for any of the marquee names, but the pitching he acquired was, to be kind, not a difference maker.

I suppose he might have avoided the Lester types because he figured Sale and Houck were both better options. But he ignored too much of the reliever market for seemingly too long and took home only the table scraps…

1B C.J. Cron was named National League Player of the Week while hitting .556/.636/1.278 for the Rockies... which raises the question why the free-agent-to-be was doing that for the Rockies instead of having been traded to a contender in need of more production at first base.

Another trade deadline darling.

Maybe he offered way more than any of us thought he would and was turned down.

Maybe he felt some quality players would cost less than they ended up costing.

Maybe he felt like getting guys like Cron would just muddy the waters with Schwarber and cause a player to be DFA'd he was not willing to DFA. (I have a list of 4-5 players I would not mind seeing DFA'd, but Bloom likely feels differently.)

We may never know what was offered and or turned down or even laughed at.

I do not think the team was being dishonest by saying they were looking for significant additions, and I think they feel Schwarber was significant, as do I.

I was against Cron but I would take Cron over doing nothing except trading for Schwarber (on the position player front).

The Red Sox added two lousy relievers at the deadline, two players that weren't needed, and yet Bloom couldn't find another position player? I think Bloom pulled a groin muscle in his brain, maybe Cora did too.
