My goodness was that pathetic. Gonzalez walks, Vazquez singles, and then each of them runs himself into an out for no other reason than incredible stupidity.

 

So the Sox now have a suspect rotation, suspect hitting, suspect defense, suspect bullpen, and suspect baserunning. I can't remember the last time any of them did something really good on the basepaths--except of course for Duran's in the park home run (later rules a triple and error).

 

Vazquez these days makes extra special efforts to do something dumb on the basepaths, so it is to Cora's discredit that he never does anything to rein Vazquez in.

Cordero's acting job of getting hit was right up there with Pauly Shore.

Barnes, Vazquez, Cora, and the pitching just might want to rethink Barnes going with a fastball down the middle for his first pitch. He almost blew his 2d straight game doing that. Plus he has stupidly bragged to the press that he likes to get that first pitch strike with a fastball down the middle.

 

I know Cora is a smart manager. But why oh why does he encourage rank stupidity among his players?

The average OPS in MLB this season is. 715.

The average OPS of the sox 6-9 hitters today is. 603, which is a disgrace for a 210 million dollar team.

Here's another dumb thing the Sox do--in my opinion. Other teams' hitters will occasionally, not often, not leap out of the way on an inside pitch and thereby get 1b on an HBP. Sox players will do anything to prevent an HBP--not sometimes, not most of the time, but all of the time.
