Richards throws too many fastballs, period. Dinger by Cabrera, age 38, opposite field. WEEI guys say Richards is on a "have a dinger" streak.

Good job by Richards on Haase. Fastball out of the zone, fouled off. K with the slider plus curve and changeups.

He needs to mix his pitches to be effective.

The mystery to me is how much Vazquez and Richards seem to love his fastball, which is the exact same pitch opposing hitters want to see. I get his concern about his curveball, now that he can't doctor it up, but even it is a better pitch than that fastball.

Tonight he looks like he has four no-baloney pitches: fastball, curve, slider, and changeup, so no reason for half of them to be fast balls.

JD rips it out to right as fast as it came in. That type of hit could have beat the Rays

It must have been a mirage. Someone said his bat speed has slowed.

We just cannot seem to make any breathing room against teams lately. Might not matter against the Tigers.

I figured with one out of Verdugo got the ball on the ground the Tigers would have a tough time doubling him up and we would have our third run....up 3-1. But NOOOO.

As for the Rays, it appears that if you are not ahead by the 7th inning it does not look like you will win that game.

Finally, in the bottom of the 3d, the WEEI guys notice that all 4 of Richards' pitches are working. Then of course he throws his very popular fastball right down the middle--producing a sharp single to RF.

I remember the gem Richards threw vs Mets. If I recall well, the success he had not only in that game but in the good stretch he had early in the season, was in great part of the good usage of his breaking balls. If somehow he can do that again, he will turn around.

Verdugo ripped it, just right at the ss. 5 feet towards left it’s a run, 10 feet either way it’s a base hit.

It's rare to see him run real hard. That was hard hit and right at the perfectly positioned SS. It wouldn't have occured to him to bunt down the 3B line like Devers did last week

I might have an idea on the defensive positioning vs Vaz, who is making a living off bloops to short right center

It would have been nice to see Verdugo run as hard to 1st as the SS ran to 2nd base carting a glove and ball with him.

Well, Verdugo usually carries his bat along with him to save the batboy the nuisance of picking it up
