I wish they kept Otto since he could've actually helped this year. But everyone else is years away from the bigs, and the best players were probably middle infielders which is our position of most depth (in the low minors at least). Since they've now declared that they're buyers then I hope they make more moves. Gallo is a nice add but he ain't turning the season around.

6 f***ing prospects. Three of which are actually good prospects in smith, duran and pereira. Wtf?

i'm lovin' this.

Trade for scherzer, now!

I realize this is as much of a deal for 22 as it is for 21, but I’m not sure it needed to be done. If the Yanks were a single player away, then I’d say go for it. But they need so much to go right to be a force for the POs and right now it seems they’re playing for a wild card spot with a chance you’re out after a single game. That being said, they dealt from a position of strength. Otto finally showed his promise this year after years of poor control and maddening injury history. Hauver was older for an A ball prospect who’s 21 looks solid mostly because of what he did in his first 8 games. Duran probably has the highest ceiling and really started showing the starting 2b talent he’s had from the beginning. He’s the biggest loss. Smith is a talented offensive player who’s just destroyed balls this year but is old for his league. Outside of Duran, they’ve all got fringe starter futures and likely backup/utility futures or bullpen futures. This doesn’t hurt as much as losing Periera. While Pereira isn’t as highly touted (yet) as the guys going to the Rangers, he’s a legit CFer who can hit and we have almost none of that in the system. Meanwhile, the yanks have a pretty solid core of middle infielders coming up and dealt from a position of strength

Joel Sherman points out that Gallo is exactly the kind of player Cashman seems obsessed with - another big hairy monster.

Other than Smith I'm not worried about any of those prospects. I really liked Smith. Glad we kept Pereira. I'm really high on him.

The Yankees just added more mess to the pile of crap.

The Yankees won't have much payroll flexibility at the end of 2021. Kluber is the only significant contract coming off the books (assuming they pick up Britton's option) and are looking at arb raises for the following: Gallo, Judge, Sanchez, Voit, Urshela, Torres, Taillon, Green, German, Loaisiga, Andujar.

The Yankees free agents at the end 2022: Chapman, Britton, Judge, Gallo, Sanchez, Taillon, Green.

Eric Van's post on Gallo:

Guys like him often fatten their stats against poor pitchers and are less impressive against the best, because those are the pitchers who can win the strikeout versus homer battle. Last time I ran the numbers, Stanton and Sanchez were two of the worst clutch hitters in all of MLB.

So I was optimistic that Gallo had bad splits in high leverage, which is the easiest way to check for this, since high lev is unduly populated by elite relievers.

Well, he may have the worst high-lev split I've ever seen, and it's way worse than average (for him) this year. Hard numbers tomorrow in the AL East thread ...

But the short version is that he's the Anti-Verdugo.

Alex: 107 wRC+, 1.71 Win Probability Added

Joey: 140 wRC+, 0.03 WPA.

Leverage Index 2.37 or higher:

Gallo 0/18, 7 BB

Verdugo 7/15, 2B, 2 HR, 2 BB, HBP

That's a .280 OPS versus 1.489.

Otto is an interesting guy and his numbers this year are quite impressive. His fastball isn't bad and he has a nasty curve (plus pitch) but he is already 24 or 25 and might not have a lot of remaining projection and he doesn't have a plus third pitch. In short, Otto will have a hard time making it as a starter (without a third pitch) but he does profile as a very effective 3 inning reliever type. Those guys are becoming more valuable in today's game in which starters rarely go beyond 6 innings and teams that can get 3 innings out of a single reliever can avoid using up the bullpen. It is also worth noting that the Rangers only traded away 1.2 seasons of value in Gallo. When we look at the trade from that perspective, the Rangers did pretty well in the return. The Rangers had discussed a long term contract with Gallo but the two sides were far apart. In other words, it sounds like Gallo wants a fortune in free agency and so what are the Yankees going to do about that? Can the Yankees sign both Judge and Gallo to long terms deals in the 200-300 million range? If not, which one leaves after 2022? Edited by Fan_since_Boggs

While I o hate to see the Yankees get Gallo, the lone bright spot for me is that I have him on my fantasy team and outside of Colorado, this was about the best place he could have gone...

That’s true too. Cashman loved high OBP, low contact guys. Judge-Gallo-Stanton. Might end up with 600K’s between them if they ever can stay healthy for a full year

Just in August ;)

Gallo is the lefty power bat the Yanks have been lacking. They would be in better shape today if they had him all year. Probably too late now.

Keeping Gallo long term makes more sense than keeping Judge long term, since Gallo has that lefty bat. But Judge is so popular with the fan base. Maybe the Yankees will sign both to long term contracts but that will cost a lot of money. Hal will be OK with resigning both players while saddled with the Cole and Stanton contracts?

He’ll heat up eventually. We haven’t needed much from him to this point

He may- he may not. He has been better than this over his career, but that is no guarantee.

In 115 at-bats with the Yankees, Joey Gallo has only recorded 15 hits.

A poor man’s Dalbec.

Since becoming a Yankee, Gallo is hitting .130/.291/.325/.617 with 61 strikeouts and 28 walks. (151 PAs)

Over the same time period, Dalbec is hitting .321/.412/.702/1.115 with 25 strikeouts and 11 walks. (97 PAs)

Just to be fair: Gallo leads the league in strikeouts. But also leads the league in walks . He has 38 home runs , 13 since joining the Yankees at the deadline. He is a good outfielder with a great arm. So , it's not all negative by any means. Edited by dgalehouse

You don't trade a ton of prospects and hope to bring that back.
