Jared Carrabis: "The best part about tonight is that whenever you ask a Yankee fan if they remember that time Aroldis Chapman gave up a home run in the postseason to end New York's season, they have to ask which time."

To me , the Yankee's loss does not make this dismal Red Sox season any easier to take. We have had too much success to fall back on that old routine. But I guess we have to take our solace any way we can .

Yankees went another year without winning the pennant. In a 60 game season, many more of their arbitration players/to be players gained another year of service. Translation. The team payroll got more expensive and is coming closer the the cliff. Edited by Nick

At least we know that the Sox were not trying to win this year. They were trying to get under the luxury tax and get some good draft picks to build with. The Yankees were trying to win and couldn't do it again. It doesn't make the Sox season any better but at least there will be no parade in NYC.

I read the article today regarding the extensive changes expected to our 40 man roster during the offseason and I tried my hand at predicting who will go by spring training. The team should change and it looks certain to be very different.

Here is my attempt.

40-man roster:

PITCHERS (22): Yoan Aybar, Matt Barnes, Ryan Brasier, Austin Brice, Dylan Covey, Nathan Eovaldi, Matt Hall, Darwinzon Hernandez, Tanner Houck, Mike Kickham, Robinson Leyer, Chris Mazza, Martin Perez, Nick Pivetta, Jeffrey Springs, Robert Stock, Domingo Tapia, Josh Taylor, Andrew Triggs, Phillips Valdez, Marcus Walden, Ryan Weber.

60 day IL returnees E-Rod, Chris Sale, Brewer, Godley, Hart

Rule 5 Draft Protectees: Groome, Mata, Seabold,

CATCHERS (3): Christian Vazquez, Kevin Plawecki, Deivy Grullón.

INFIELDERS (10): Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, Bobby Dalbec, Michael Chavis, Jonathan Arauz, Christian Arroyo, Yairo Muñoz Tzu-Wei Lin, José Peraza, C.J. Chatham.

60 day IL returnees Pedroia

Rule 5 Draft Protectees: Potts, Rosario, Wong

OUTFIELDERS (5): Jackie Bradley Jr., Alex Verdugo, J.D. Martinez, César Puello, Marcus Wilson.

I

60 day IL returnees Benintendi

In addition, there are a couple of minor league FA candidates we may want to keep and no doubt Bloom will be actively seeking additions to make the team more competitive. So there are 40 now with 2 FA we may want to keep and 12 additions, If we keep both which 12 get cut?

How many will Bloom add? Say it’s 6. Who are the additional players leaving?

Is there some way to drop Pedroia from the 40 man?

Okay. But to me it's like, " My kid flunked out of school , but I don't feel too bad because that neighbor's brat , who I hate , didn't get the scholarship he was seeking ."

You already knew your kid was going to flunk out school. You've already processed that. Then you didn't have to hear your neighbor brag about his son who didn't get the scholarship. There's a difference.

We already knew Sox was going to suck.

Now only if the Dodgers lose, trifecta.

Nick what do you think about Ozuna roaming LF at Fenway ? Do we pull the plug on JBJ or offer him something like 3 /12 I’m done with Benny as a Full time player I’d like to see him traded this offseason even though it’s selling low .JBJ wants more let him go find it .

Rosario plays CF.

Of course, it sucks when we suck, but I don't think being happy the Yanks lose is like a brat missing a scholarship.

This is the Yankees we are talking about- not some brat.

We need a CF'er not a LF'er.

Do you mean $12M x 3 or $4M x 3 for JBJ?

Is there any way that Pedroia could be removed from the 40 man? I doubt if anyone believes he can play a single game so having him on the roster hurts the team.

I believe they will try to keep JBJ and if successful may avoid another FA outfielder. I also believe Beni will be gone and Duran brought up.

No, I don't really see the two scenarios being the same. I agree that my kid flunking out of school would not be made any better by another kid not getting a scholarship.

A rivalry in sports is a different situation. I don't want the Astros to win either, but if they are eliminated, that doesn't really help in getting over the Red Sox season. When there's a motto of "Anyone but the Yankees", however, the Yankees being eliminated is big.

To each their own, obviously.

For me the rivalry is a very real and intense thing, and Yankee losses feel almost as good as Red Sox wins.

And I really like the fact that my signature line doesn't change.

I was the same way. But all of our success in recent years has taken away the anxiety . No longer afraid of, or worried about the Yankees . We should beat them consistently , not depend on someone else to do it. This was still a terrible season , no matter how you slice it.

We all respond to this stuff differently. For me the Red Sox winning 4 titles and taking away that angst has made me more dispassionate about the bad stuff that happened in 2019 and 2020.

Also, I still have faith in the team's ownership. I think they're still motivated to spend money on the team and put winning teams on the field. I think we'll see good things going forward.

If he stays on the 60 Day IL all year, he does not count as a member on the 40 man roster. His contract will always count on the luxury tax budget, unless he retires and forgoes his salary.

If he retires and forgoes his salary , he can be carried on the " mentally incapacitated " list.

Pedroia has not been on the 40 man roster since April of 2019, other than a brief obigatory add last off-season...

If the Sox outright release him then he also is not on the 40 man. That's another way to at least preserve a slot even if nothing can be done about the DBT hit.

He's already not on the 40 man roster. He might be put on it briefly in the offseason, but he will go alost immediately back to the 60 day IL, which removes him from the 40 man roster.

The only thing about Pedroia that still impacts the Sox at all is his final year of AAV...

I've suggested this before, but now with just one year left at $12M, Pedey should retire, and then we re-sign him at $3M a year x 5 years as a consultant or coach.

Eh.

If he stays on solely to collect the money that he is no longer able to physically earn due to an injury on the battlefield, I'm ok with it. I don't think the $13.75mill is a hindrance to Bloom to the same degree it would be to Dombrowski...

$13M could net us 2 one year deals for decent RP & CF'er.

Sure it could. And the Sox have at least that much to spend already.

I have faith enough in Bloom that Pedroia's deal won't be an issue...

$43M to spend, instead of $30M could be the difference maker.

Or not.
