I am hoping he gets at least 4 more rehab starts in the minors.

5 total might be 1 or 2 too many. He can get a couple relief outing in the bigs before starting a game- in a sense getting 2 rehab outings in the bigs before starting.

I can't imagine him being worse than 2-3 guys we have in the pen, right now.

With that freak, it's more about his arm bouncing back after each session than stretching him out.

Agreed, but if he's looking good in rehab, I'd call him up earlier than after 5 outings.

I'd give him one more start in POR and WOO. If he feels ready to go after that, I call him up and you just figure out his innings from there.

Sounds ok.

In spring training, don’t pitchers usually get around 5 starts in order to get the pitch count up?

Agreed.

I guessed 2-3 outings.

First game might be in relief for a 3-4 inning start.

Sale: 3.2 Innings, 0 H, 1 BB, 6 K

Couldn't ask for anything more encouraging.

We are talking about...

Chris Freakin' Sale!

I agree with the timeline. Maybe 2 more rehab starts at the most if he is feeling good. Any more would be a waste of time for our HOFamer.

I don't honestly care if he's not "stretched out." As long as he can go every 5 days, he can come up and provide more than the bottom of the rotation currently is. I think it would be a huge boost for this team.

I'd bring him up after just a few more starts, Houck can piggyback with him and get you 9-12 good outs.

What if they just piggybacked Sale with Houck the next month or so?

I literally didn't look at the last post when I made my comment. I think there's a really good chance they do just this or some variation of it. I can see Houck being the guy that gets used in long relief but also comes in to get an out or two as well vs. tough RHP

I was just thinking about the combo of going from Sale's nasty LHP slider to Houck's nasty RHP slider. That could give an opposing manager fits when trying to make out a lineup.

We could piggy back Sale after Perez goes 3 and Houck after Richards goes 3-4.

Spread the wealth.

Doesn't that reduce the benefit of switching from LHP to RHP or vice versa. Isn't it to the Sox' advantage to switch between LHP and RHP in a piggyback situation?

Good point. Then bring in Sale after Richards and Houck after Perez.

Apparently, they're going to start Houk against TOR, I'm guessing he may get another 1 vs. NYY too. I'm a little surprised because they stopped stretching him out and he's only been throwing two pitches but I can see why they're doing it too. Both teams are very heavy RHH and Houk can dominate righties. I still think he ends up in the bullpen maybe even at the end of this year, and I think he could be dominant in that role.

Yes, Houck seems to line up very well against TOR and NYY. We'll see if it works out.

Didn't I read a comment from Cora that said that they would not call up Sale until he was fully stretched out?

At any rate, all reports on Sale so far are extremely encouraging! Woot!

Boston Red Sox’s Chris Sale to make next rehab start Saturday for WooSox; ‘He’s getting close’

This start should be in MLB, but whatever...

Speier:

Alex Cora said that it's April for Chris Sale. Chris Sale disagrees. "This isn’t the flyover game. This isn’t the ‘everyone’s happy’ game. This is like, ‘Oh, [expletive] — it’s go time.’"

I'm swimming in happiness for Woo.

Does that count?

Brazier and ort completely melted down tonight and lost an 8 to 0 lead! Not sure we want brazier anywhere near Boston.
