I don't understand all the shock and awe over this. We should have seen it coming. We're all fairly astute baseball people so didn't we see from the beginning that Sale's motion fairly screamed "Elbow Trouble"? I certainly did and I don't even have a medical degree from the University of Phoenix so I have to assume that our "crack medical staff" could see it too.

My thought is that the FO decided to ride this horse as long as it could run and deal with the problem when it happened. Now it's happened but it shouldn't be a surprise.

But elbow ligament damage is very fixable nowadays and the likelihood of return to prior ability levels is pretty high. Heck, a lot of these guys return with increased velocity. So I am not understanding this treatment plan. Every day that goes by without TJS is another day of 2021 that you don't have him for. If the sox truly let this thing drag out into April or May, then you've got a strong likelihood that you either have Sale as a reliever in late 2021 or no Sale at all. You punt two seasons of him instead of one.

Help us understand this Doc.

I have to assume that if the tests showed an actual tear Sale would be getting the surgery.

So if it's not a tear, what the hell is it?

We aren’t getting the whole story. You don’t have Sale saying TJS is a possibility if they don’t see an actual tear.

Armchair doctoring here, but reading between the lines, my bet is he had a partial tear last year and they likely see something similar now. That would fit with the treatment plans

Armchair non-doctoring here. Maybe Sale’s medical opinion isn’t what we think it is?

Is that what Tanaka had, a partial tear?

But don't all muscle "strains", "sprains" or "pulls" involve partial tearing, even if they're micro tissue fibers? I'm just going on experience from years of injuries (mostly my own) and hearing the interchangeable nomenclature.

A lot of problems with athletes or even active peeps involve the build-up of internal scarring from strains/sprains/pulls that impinge full range of motion, and thus performance... so a lot of "procedures" that aren't reconstructive are just lasers zapping crap and making space in the joints again. Of course, every operation -- even the one-inch incisions for the arthroscope and camera -- will then cause more scar tissue when those holes heal. Ugh, I typed all this standing up, and not sitting in an armchair.

Wake up! Sale will never be more than a 1 inning pitcher no matter what the elbow outcome turns out. Forget him.

We better hope not.

If he is a one inning pitcher for the next 4 years, it isn’t the worst thing ever. But the Sox will need to get some actual starting pitching from somewhere else...

He better be Mariano.

Non sequitur.

You’re starting to use that a bit too freely and occasionally inappropriately.

I think you need some training...

It was used correctly. You agreed that Sale could be a one inning pitcher. mvp then said if he's going to do that he better be Mariano. So your joke blew the sequence.

No. I implied that Sale has outperformed Mariano in another role.

OK. It just wasn't a very good joke.

Guy walks into a bar and hears someone say “hey handsome”

He looks at the bartender and says, “who said that”

The bartender says, “the peanuts, they’re complimentary “ lmao.

Such a classic. Anywho.

The one that always cracked me up much more than it should have is:

A rope goes into a bar and orders a beer. The bartender says “Sorry, we don’t serve ropes here.” So the rope heads off into the bathroom and ties himself up and combs his ends out. He heads back to the bar and orders a beer. The bartender says “Are you sure you’re not a rope?”

“Nope. I’m a frayed knot.”

And then there was the three-legged dog who walked into the bar.

Bartender: "How can I help you, mister?"

Dog: "I'm lookin' for the man who shot my paw."

I agree. A true non sequitur would be like “at least Sale won’t get trampled at a right wing rally like Mariano.”

And the bartender says “why the big paws?”

Here's a really bad one: Red Sox trade their best homegrown player in a generation to restock the farm, and none of the prospects they get in return are pitchers.

Sorry. Some day we'll look back on this, and it still won't be funny.

Meh. I’ve heard this one before.

Actually if you paid attention, you might have seen a glimpse why...

What’s the difference between a Red Sox fan and a baby?

A baby will stop crying after a while.

Alternate answer: a baby will grow up eventually;)

This was the move that earned Dombrowski a pink slip IMO. There were all kinds of suspicions regarding Sale's health. The Red Sox could have waited to offer Sale a new contract. Dombrowski rushed into the move and it was a disaster.

I'm still hoping that Sale comes back strong and the Red Sox can move Sale at the trade deadline to a team desperate for a starter, but most likely the Red Sox are stuck with Sale for the duration of the contract.

This might be Dombrowski's worse move, since it was so obvious that Sale was not healthy, and the Red Sox only needed to avoid the long term commitment.

Henry signed off on it at the time.
