If they are going to bring anyone in, it should still give enough wiggle room so that the Sox can try to do an extension with ERod and Devers.

Nah...who wants those two guys. The new Chief Baseball Officer has to leave his mark you know.

"Hey Officer Bloom are you the new sheriff in town? Officer Bloom can you at least blink so we know you are alive?"

He's alive. He's just following orders. I hope he has been given enough of a budget to be competitive while he builds up the farm.

We better hope we don't get draft penalties for the cheating case. One of the few good things about doing poorly in 2019 was finally getting a decent draft slot.

Kevin Pillar, nope that did not excite me. Solid 4th OF, but not running down to the book to get my futures ticket.

The move fills a hole. It wasn’t meant to be for marketing.

If the team stays as constituted, then Pillar is your 4th OFer. He was a good get, especially if the plan is to deal off guys on short term deals. Heck, he could be one of them

Agree. Nobody in the Minors, or on the Bench, that can play as well as Pillar. In the Outfield. Smart signing in he could be Traded to at the Deadline. Now, everybody will say you will get crap, but that's not you build a team for the Future, if you hit on a Prospect, to teams that really might need him in a Pennant run.

Teams pay a little more when they are desperate.

The fact that Marcus Wilson is on the shortlist for an injury call up really shows how mismanaged the whole organization has been.

Per soxprosepcts.com, the Red Sox only have 4 outfielders in their top 37 prospects. They have 5 shortstops in that range...

I guess the good news is you can pick up a decent player like Pillar for chump change.

(And please don't anyone use that statement as a cue to point out again that JBJ is overpaid.)

Trey Ball still rolling around? Remember reading years ago Sox prospects, that Ball was a sure thing, as at least a #3 MLB Starter. Haven't been on that site in years.

Yeah, him and Casey Kelly.

The really sad part of the Sox death of outfield talent is that the only outfielders even remotely of note that Dombrowski only traded away were Manny Margot and Luis Basabe....

They've drafted a bunch of guys, they've just never panned out. I hope Bloom is better at listening to his scouts than DD was.

I don't believe they ever had him ranked as a #3 floor. That may have been a ceiling, which is different.

The most glowing report I could find on Trey Ball:

Scouting Report and 2015 Outlook: Coming into the year, the expectations for Ball were high based upon his draft position, but after seeing him in Spring Training we warned readers that he was less advanced than a normal high first-round pick and his development could be slow. Accordingly, it was a struggle for Ball earlier in the season, but then he started to make strides as the year progressed. Ball has a great pitcher's frame, listed at 6-foot-6, 190 pounds. He is on the skinny side at present with room to fill out, especially in his lower half. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a smooth, low-effort delivery, although he struggled to repeat his mechanics during the season. Ball’s fastball can sit in the 90-92 mph range, getting all the way up to 95, but his velocity was inconsistent during the year, dipping down into the high-80s for some starts before recovering later in the season. Most concerning from reports was that Ball’s arm looked slow at times, and the fastball lacked life and was not missing bats, with hitters squaring it up often. Ball’s secondaries include a changeup and curveball, with his changeup the more advanced of the two at present. Ball has good feel for his changeup that he throws in the low-80s. His curveball showed improvement later in the year after he altered his grip, according to Alex Speier, and this coincided with his improved results. Ball's curveball is a long, left-hander's curveball with good shape and depth when he snaps it off and finishes the pitch. Both pitches, however, need refinement and improved consistency from outing to outing. Overall, Ball’s development could go a lot of ways depending on what happens next season. He could re-establish himself as one of the more exciting young pitching prospects in the system, or guys like Michael Kopech and Jake Cosart could pass him if he stagnates. Ball will compete for a spot in Salem during spring training, but because of his struggles this year, I expect him to start the season with Greenville with the eye towards a promotion after a few months. - Ian Cundall

Jackie Bradley Jr's value per Fangraphs is $108.2 million.

Jackie Bradley Jr has earned $20.3 million making him UNDERPAID by $87.9 million. or not.

The highest Ball was ever ranked was 9th by Sox Prospects. That's never considered "a sure thing."

He was ranked by BA one year, like #96 or around there.

That's no "sure thing" either, but it's not much worse than Casas.

My point is there is just no such thing as a "sure thing" in A ball, when the vast majority of your competition will never play another level. The real attrition starts in AA, and to me, that is the most predictive level. I don't take any prospect seriously until he gets to AA. (That doesn't mean i think all A ball players can and should be traded. But in many cases, it actually winds up being the right time to do so.)

Does any of that matter to armchair budgetmeisters?
