As an unabashed capitalist I pay a portion of Mookie's salary every time I buy a ticket to a game or buy a product advertised on NESN

Oh please. 0.00000000000005%. I don’t think that’s a voting share...

lol. sorry man i live in the real world.

ever been to Guatemala? i have about 8 times.

pretty sure i know how dirty we did them.

and it had zero to do with the Soviet Union and had everything to do with United Fruit Company.

i see that you want to turn this to leftwing/rightwing politics. that has zero to do with it. we did Guatemala and many other countries dirty. but we are a rich and powerful nation so i wouldnt want to live anywhere else on the planet. but i am not nieve to think that my luxury isnt at the blood, death, misery of other peoples.....

Unless his settle number comes way down - trade him. A 12 year contract for a player who depends fairly heavily on his speed is insanity. Even more so when it's at anything near $35 a year. Trade him and move on.

Agree- I could live with 35 even slightly higher for 5-6 years . Does anyone really think Betts will be worth 35 mil when he is 35? He is no doubt a great player and not taking anything away from him but he has struggled in the postseason.

He is my sons favorite player of all time and one of my favorites also but if someone can find me a position player who signed a long term mega deal, won and was at the top of his game for the duration of the contract let me know

Me and the other long suffering Sox fans get to vote with our feet. If enough do (and we don't even need to be a majority) the FO will feel the pain.

For all their faults, they are still the best damn intelligence agency in the world and we would be far worse if it were not for them and their colleagues in the IC.

Problem is, Mookie is apparently not looking for 4 or 5 or a 6 year deal. He is apparently looking for 10-12 years. The teams that are going to be willing to give him that sort of deal are the teams that would look to make him the entire focus of their marketing campaigns over that span of time. That leaves teams like the Red Sox and the Dodgers out. The Red Sox stopped long term marketing of ballplayers ages ago. They Market Fenway Park, Speculation regarding the potential greatness of a particular edition of the team, its charities and NESN. Thats it. They don't need Mookie for that.

So what teams does that leave in?

We’re far from suffering, but I agree there is power in the masses.

Clearly I was just showing what fair market value for Mookie is. Why do some people think it’s just 5-6 years? Makes no damn sense.

I don't think % wise too many people think it's only 5-6 years.

Well, anyone who says that is being dumb.

If the years aren’t the problem then they should just front load the contract.

The years are ALWAYS the problem, and frontloading doesn’t matter for tax purposes...

Well my comments are not about what teams are in on a trade. Whoever trades for Mookie is trading for one year of Mookie. The Dodgers could certainly trade for one year of Mookie. I just don't see them looking to sign him to a long term deal.

A long term deal could come from any of the teams that do build their marketing around a player. So that would be anybody other than the Red Sox, the Dodgers, the Yankees, the Cubs and maybe the Giants. I could not really add anybody else to that list though others might be able to do so. Any other MLB team IMO could well envision having Mookie on the cover of their publicity guide for ten years running.

I don't think Mookie's fair market value is 5-6 years, based on the contracts that are being thrown around.

But if I'm a GM, that's about what I would willingly pay him, with a higher AAV. I might reluctantly go 7-8 years for a guy like Mookie, the key word here being 'reluctantly'.

Yet, you want us to keep Price for his last 3 years.

(Welcome back, Kimmi!)

The Sox should not have signed him to begin with. The years on that contract were/are the problem.

Trading him right now while trying to contend would be a mistake.

For anyone wanting to punt this season and reload, then trading him is obviously the right choice. I'm not in that boat.

And thanks!

So, trading Betts for Verdugo is not "punting," but trading Price for a bag of balls is?

I'm not sure I agree.

Maybe the logic is the Sox can sacrifice some offense but really have no pitching depth to speak of?

To me, the drop off from Betts to Verdugo will be greater than the drop off from Price to whoever we can afford with the freed up salary space.

Like I said, there's not much left to sign for 2020, but I suppose we could trade for someone else's lesser salary dump pitcher, still reset and be better off than by losing Betts.

I guess I don't have as much faith in Price as many here seem to have, and while I realize he may have a 3-4+ WAR season, and we could look back with a big heart ache "what if?", but I'd not even stop at trading Betts & Price. I'd also trade 1 year guys like JBJ and Workman (the perfect sell high player). I'd consider 2 years guys as well, but not ERod. I'd try to extend him with the money saved by dumping Price and/or Eovaldi.

I'd try to bring Betts back, but if we get outbid, we'd have a lot of budget space to let Bloom do his thing.

We might not even be all that bad in 2020 without Betts, Price, Eovaldi, Workman and JBJ, depending on who we get back, but our 2021 and beyond outlook could and should look a lot better.

The drop off might be greater, but there are still good outfielders available.

Rank the following 4 SP/RF combos:

1. Betts and Andrew Cashner

2. Betts and Jason Vargas (or any available SP you like better)

3. Yasiel Puig and Price

4. Domingo Santana and Price

I can see the argument that, given the rest of the Sox team, the last two make for a better overall team. Yes Crazy Puig/ Santana / whoever in RF is a bigger drop off, but the Sox still have Bogaerts, Devers, Martinez, and Benintendi. Those are 4 pretty good anchors...
